And Aragorn - I am ever pleased to be helpful in your education on the matter of the best cricket team in the world - it is Australia - last year they won the Loreus Award for the "Best Sporting Team" in the world, beating teams like the LA Lakers, Brazil Soccer (whoops - football) and Ferrari in the process.

Let's face it - America is the king of commercialised syndicated sports and the TELEVISION NETWORK. How easy is it for networks in english speaking nations (and many with foreign tongues) to fill many vacant programming hours with cheap American sport. To our local networks it is a good way to fill vacant programming hours with stuff that they can get cheaper than most things they can create "in house". No-one can fault the American teams and sports for being excellent at the marketing of their sports and clubs internationally.

Does the mass media exposure make a game better - does bigger stadiums? I don't think that either of those decides the issue, and I don't think it is a topic that stands up to rational debate. Some people are exposed to baseball from birth and like it - some people are exposed to cricket and like it. The amount of poeple that start with one, then switch over and say screw that, this one is much better - well I don't think that population would be big enough to sample.

Incidentally, all my family (fathers, brothers, cousins) played cricket. My twin cousins went on to have professional baseball careers in the ABL. When the family gets together for Christmas though, those two are the first ones to suggest a game of cricket after lunch, then veg out the next day and watch the first day of the Boxing Day Test.
I think you summed it up best. It basically depends on which sport you were exposed to first. I don't think I ever heard of a cricket league in Ohio. So, of course, I would be a little biased towards cricket. Good debate though

I'm sorry, but that wouldn't happen to be an Australian award, would it ?

How is the winner of that award picked? By the people or the media?

[/QUOTE]LOL Johnny - you are suspicious aren't you Schumacher beat Thorpe for the best sportsman - No Johnny - the Laureus World Sports Foundation (got the spelling wrong in my original post) is based in Monaco, with the awards being sposored by Cartier and Mercedes Benz. As to the voting :

Quote:
From their website :

Laureus World Sports Awards winners are chosen through a unique selection process. Since 1999, over 300 leading sports journalists from more than 75 countries have joined the Selection Panel, which nominates candidates across all disciplines throughout the world.

Sportsmen and women are eligible for nomination based on performances between 01 February and the end of January the following year.

The selection process commences thereafter with each Selection Panel member proposing five potential recipients from all sports and all continents for each of the following Laureus award categories.

Ah thanks, i was searching for that on Google, needless to say i came up with nothing. Well, impressive feat, i would have thought such an award would go to a footballteam (Brazil, Real Madrid, maybe even S-Korea).

Sorry but cricket is a little too goofy for me. Ill take good old fashioned baseball any day, just for the pure history of the game. In cricket there is no Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, or Yogi Berra. 'm sure there are famous players of personality, but nothing like what we have in baseball. Cricket, is a popular sport, and though I am not a fan of it I can earnestly respect it, but give me a baseball game any day.
