Just as a test, I tried to find the best way to live, and how many planets it would take:
FOOD 0.4 MOBILITY 0 SHELTER 0.4 GOODS/SERVICES 0.3 TOTAL FOOTPRINT 1.1 IN COMPARISON, THE AVERAGE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IN YOUR COUNTRY IS 8.8 GLOBAL HECTARES PER PERSON. WORLDWIDE, THERE EXIST 1.8 BIOLOGICALLY PRODUCTIVE GLOBAL HECTARES PER PERSON. IF EVERYONE LIVED LIKE YOU, WE WOULD NEED 1.0 PLANETS |

Eh, am I winning so far, then? Probably because I never use a car... about five times a year probably. And I don't eat as much as I reckon I should.
Oh well, still not good enough! Come on people, every single one of us needs to turn vegetarian and never burn ANYTHING ever again, lest we destroy Earth, which was obviously destined to survive forever. |

FOOD 2.8
MOBILITY 0.1 SHELTER 3.6 GOODS/SERVICES 2.9 TOTAL FOOTPRINT 9.4 Shees 5.2 plants! I don't think the thing is at all accurate anyway. I find it really hard to conserve out here. I ask people who work with me to car pool all the time but they always have some dumb excuse. I've converted all my heaters to new, more efficient ones. We only have to put our regular garbage out once a month 'cos we have so little. I've even changed most of the lights to florescent. My wife just got the "save a ton" challenge in the mail. She saw it on TV (Canada only I think) and sent away for it. It challenges Canadians to cut down 1 ton in pollution.

I tried it both ways, from my actual current living situation and also theoretically if I and my wife moved back to my hometown. Both were at footprint 8.8 and needing 4.9 planets.
Don't know about accurate, but definitely consistent. Given that one place is teeming with humanity (Shanghai) and the other is BFE Alaska with only about 2000 people, seemed odd until I realized that the two are about polar opposites in almost all ways. What does this test tell me? People in Alaska need more space. Yup, that's why there are less than 1,000,000 people in the *whole state*.
