I still have it too! Box is slightly worn out, but all there
I've still got a version of that board games as well. I got into AD&D before I even knew there was a distinction between it and D&D. First time I didn't really "play" as I basically just made a character with some older guys (high school - I was like 11). Then a friend of mine got me into it when I was 12 or so. I consumed the books and started DM-ing quickly. Been a fairly regular thing for me since then. |

Back in the '70s. I was in a very active naval wargaming group. Someone started talking about this cool new game, and several of us bought the First Edition books, back when it first changed from "mere" (uncopyrighted) D&D to AD&D, (C). My first character was a dwarf named Gimli, since even then I was a LOTR man, and I recall my friend Dennis , an avid Fritz Lieber fan, had a thief named Jack the Toad. Then came medical pracice and only an occasional game, then I stumbled upon BG at Wal-Mart. I saw the magical words, Dungeons and Dragons on the box, bought it, and I have been happily hooked, ever since. I never have bought into the 2nd Edition vs. 3d Edition controversy. Heck, I remember getting excited when Rangers were announced as a new class.

Ooooh, Cespenar says Attalus brings back fond memories of first edition books.
I remember being absolutely PSYCHED about - God, what was the name of it - the book in First Ed. that had the new Barbarian and Acrobat classes - Unearthed Arcana, that's it!!! And, oh boy, once the proficiency system was introduced in Wilderness Survival Guide and Dungeoneer's Survival Guide the possibilities became ENDLESS!! |

I was into RPG's way before I even knew about CRPG's. The "gateway2 game for me must have been the classic board game Heroes' Quest. I still have a load of custom maps for it. We also did some pretty simple games in lunch breaks at school, where the "master" would have a small map scribbled on a piece of paper. I even read those sucky "choose your own adventure" books.
My first real AD&D session was a disaster. My first character sheet was lost in the bus. My next character an old female rogue con-artist (who feigned clerical powers) was killed before she had the chance of taking any action. We came to a town. Then I had to take a CON check. I failed. I died. Later the party was told that there was a plague in the town. Happy days. :6 Later I found out I had a preference for wizards. I've been suspicious of CRPG's and I still don't think they really deserve the title "role playing games", but BG2 did me in. You can't deny quality. My older brother introduced me to D&D when I was very young - I think I was about seven or eight. He was the only person in his immediate surroundings to be into it, and was desparate to find a kindred spirit. So he pushed it onto me, which at first I bedrugded him, because let's face it, this isn't the kind of thing you should be playing at age eight. He ended up paying me to play with him, and that's where it got interesting for the miniature capitalist I was at the time. It was only then that I found out how interesting it was, and for years after, we spent night after night playing it up in his room. That was a while back though, and I haven't played PnP for years now. Still, I will ask my brother if he wants to play next time I see him. For a fee, of course

Well, it all started with housing in college. Somehow, I ALWAYS ended up with a crappy number. Then a friend mentioned that there was a dorm that you didn't have to lottery for if you did some kind of art. [He was a triple major German/Comp.Sci/Engineering] I took him up on it, submitted some short stories & Boom: I had housing!
Well, it turns out that my new roommate was a DM in a D&D campaign. And that one or two cute girls would drop by for a weekly campaign. Perhaps it was peer pressure or just college, but when I got passed a character sheet, I just couldn't say no. Soon, I was rolling dice with the rest of them, living a life of sin and debauchery that has eventually led me here. (lol) PS- Does anyone remember that REALLY BAD Tom Hanks movie from the early 80s that extolled the Evils of Dungeons and Dagons??? Its Hysterical!!! Eventually he loses his mind an 'becomes' his character...? Thank God his acting & scripts improved...

hmm, how did I discover d&d. It all started with other rpg's like Diablo. After having finished Diablo II a friend of mine told me to check out BGII, so I went to the store and bought it from a few coupons I had left. Starting the game I already loved it which made me go to boards to ask some questions about it and that way got to know some people. Then I started buying more and more games and played in one online game on a messageboard, which regretably died (the game, not the board) so right now I just stay with pc games although a guy in my class seems to play d&d and asked me if I would be interested to join when they start playing again. So who knows; maybe I'll be doing pen & paper soon again.

Yes I saw that movie and my gawd was it horrible. I just can't remember what it was called. He goes insane and at the end he is on a farm with his folks who thinks are innkeepers. There was another one too...in this one the kid goes insane while playing in some tunnels and ends up being killed by the cops or some such.
