quote: You can say the pledge of allegience. You can't say "under god." And you can teach about religions--you can't teach about a *single* religion. These are public schools; for those who want to limit their child's learning to a single religion, there are always private schools, or simply the faith one teaches and maintains at home. quote: MagiK, I believe Virginia just re-instated saying the Pledge of Allegiance after the 9/11 attack. To my knowledge, they are the first state to require it be said each day. Needless to say, a LOT of people aren't happy. Mostly the same ones that took offense to schools posting "God Bless America" on thier marquee boards. AFAIK, it is still illegal in the other 49 states to require it to be said, and the schools risk a lawsuit if they even allow it to be said.

quote: From what I understand it was a Public school That seperation of Church and State (intrepatated by the Supreme Court not found in the constitution) seems to apply to Christianty. I bet Dollars to Dimes that a student in most public schools could wear a t-shirt with the star of David, or the Red Cresent(sp?) of Islam, or the symbol of what ever religon they want other then a cross, and nothing would be said. Before 11 Sept, 2001 this nation was quickly becoming a nation whinning crybabies. As for the movie I haven't seen it yet. I heard about the law suit today. I've read a couple of articles on the "incident" and the "Charlie Foxtrot" that developed because our "fearless leader" didn't follow the military's advice. Those men were sent in with-out proper back-up and armor support. And when the commanders on the ground tried to get there and help they were held up until the Pakistanis, the only armor support in the area, got permission from Pakistan! If I remember correctly ( my mind may have been clouded over due to the anger induced fog) Washington would not let our ground troops cross the Pakistani lines.

quote: Actually, John D., most schools do *not* allow non-Christian symbols. For instance, there have been several incidents of students being reprimanded, suspended and/or threatened with expulsion for wearing a shirt with a pentacle or a piece of jewelry with a pentacle. The pentacle is considered by most Christians to be satanic even though it has *absolutely* *nothing* to do with anything of the sort! If ignorance is bliss, some people must be positively orgasmic!!! (to paraphrase a bumper sticker I particularly enjoy)

quote: John D, You loose your bet, read the fine print in the material they hand out to you when you registar you kid in school. Laurel Elementary school expressly forbids the public display of religious symbols! thats all it says, you may not display religious symbols..no mention of christian, bhudist, or hindu...just religious symbols as a generic term....and when there is a dispute over what is a religious symbol (a girl had a Blessed Virgin Mary T-shirt) the School board is the final arbiter...and the girl lost. |
