Dragon Revived, Chapter 1- Surprises from the Past - Page 25

Arlyth looked up the dragon from his bedroll, the elf lain down upon it. Gently, he whispered, "My lord? How is it you know my linage... ah. I forget I resemble my father... Lord Avalon," he intoned formally, rising to one knee, "I am Arlyth, son of Calaethis." he swallowed, "Might I ask for sanctuary within your forests, my lord?" then he looked up at the silver again, his tone respectful, awed, and at the same time wary, "Might I ask if you acknowledge the bond between our two families?" he asked, his question phrased in such a way, he was effectively asking the dragon if he could address him as 'uncle'. He wasn't about to make the same mistake as he had with Alliene. Suddenly he remembered the dragon's question, "I came here to seek solitude and peace, Lord Avalon. I hope I am not intruding? Your children, as you know doubt know, lie somewhat that way." he guestured towards the boundary of the forest, still on one knee.

"Bond? What bond?" Avalon frowned and scrathed his knee, "You mean do I acknowledge that my late lady love adopted Calaethis as her cousin and therefore the bond is passed to you? I never married Verloren, so technically there is no bond between you and I, only those of Verloren's blood." He shrugged, "I suppose. So, you're travelling with my children then. Why are you not with them?"

Arlyth looked up at the great dragon and replied, "I... I wished to be alone... ...if you wished to extend the bond, you would be an...uncle." he dropped his head and focused back on topic. "They have a Thri-Kreen with them, and..." the young elf's eyes flashed, "My lord, the Thri-Kreen slew my twin, my brother. I hate their vile race... though I have been told to modify my attitude somewhat." he sighed, "I wished to spend the night away from the insectoid, so I could compose my thoughts, and mediate." he looked up, "I am glad I had the chance to meet you, my lord. It is an honour," he bowed his head.

"I bond with no one." The dragon huffed. This was obviously a matter of pride, "As for the thri-kreen, if it was the same one who slew your brother, then I would seek revenge. But it is not. You cannot judge the whole race because of one incident." He rocked forward on his toes, "You know Matron Alliene, of course. She hates humans as much as you hate the thri-kreen. Why, it is not my buisness to tell you, but you may or may not know she had a very good human friend. And is peacful with the other humans, as you may have noticed." He flopped onto his back, "But we are all different." He heaved a sigh.

Arlyth nodded to Avalon's first reply, "As you wish, my lord." he sighed, and changed topic, "So others have told me. About the Thri-Kreen that is." he sighed, then his eyes flared, "As a race, they eat the flesh of elven children..." he sighed, "As a race, the drow are evil, my lord. I have seen little that a single one of them is good at all. The same applies with the Thri-Kreen." his tone was cynical.

Avalon picked his head up and gave the young elf a look that set him back, "You see little, young one. Surely you have heard of Drizzt Do'Urden? He is a good drow. A ranger. He visited my forest once, and I had a wonderful talk with him." He folded his arms above his head and dropped his head onto his hands, "I have known Alliene for half a millenia. After Verloren died, what little warmth she had left nearly dissapeared. You are on her wrong side, so you would not see the good she does. She willingly would give her life to help my children. That in itself is the most undrowlike thing a drow could do." He yawned.

Arlyth looked skeptical. "She hates me for the blood that runs through my viens; something beyond my control, and something I cannot help, nor something I asked for. I ask you; why should I be willing to see her as a good and decent drow? Perhaps she would give her life for your children; but only because they are Verloren's." Arlyth sighed deeply. "And as for Drizzt... I won't even go there." Arlyth's eyes seemed to hold a note of contempt for the drow ranger. Odd that; there must be a reason he disliked the drow. "But I shall heed your words, my lord." he replied with a yawn, "Excuse me." he mumbled about the yawn. "I am pleased to have met you, truly." he continued, "But I cannot help but despise the Thri-Kreen. My hatred for them runs as deep as it does for the Drow." he sighed, "I cannot help myself... it is like a rage inside me; a demon." The young elf bowed his head.

Avalon grunted and rolled to his feet. He stretched, then scaled the oak and and crouched on the branch. The look he gave Arlyth wasn't a nice one,
"While your rage is understandable, see that it doesn't get my twins killed. If it does, I will be very upset. And very angry." He dissapeared into the leaves, and Arlyth felt a huge downdraft from gigantic wings, "Safe hunting, child of Calaethis." The great voice boomed down. The wind eventually receeded, and the beat of wings gradually silenced.

Arlyth looked up, and called, his voice clear, "I am not my father! I would not put my rage before the safety of my kin!" then he replied to the dragon's parting words, "My thanks; and to you also, farewell, Lord Avalon!" Then the young elf settled into his bedroll, and went to sleep.

Edit: Opps, forgot the colour for one of Arlyth's speechs.

The gnome stayed up for a bit, thinking to himself. Eventually he fells asleep with his back against the tree. He snored, though not loud enough to wake anyone. That night he slept peacefully, dreaming of science and the such.
