There are two ways to handle ship-to-ship combat (be it space or sea).
1. use the icon indexing built in to DC, available through scripts, to use frames three and four of an icon that would represent the ship. (Obviously, you need to create a special four-framed icon with the person in the first two frames and the ship in the second two.)

2. use a utility chain before the start of each ship-to-ship combat that adds a special ship npc and then subtracts everyone else; run the combat; use another utility chain to add everyone back. (I"m using utility in a very broad sense here. )

BONUS: all combats would be ship-to-ship and personal combat if any would be handled through other events that would simulate combat, or vice versa.

Have you got the icon indexing to work? I haven't figured it out and I haven't seen any examples of this and I dunno how to get it to work

Somewhere on these boards or on the yahoo list, there is an example of getting this to work. I haven't tried. I suppose that I probably should, though.

Manikus, do you have FRUA up and running?
The reason I ask is that I was going to install it on my machine either tonite or tommorow, and I was wondering how the UAShell works and if you could explain how it works to me.

I thought that having a running copy of FRUA would give me more chances to compare features in FRUA with what we can do in DC, and maybe add to the list of requests for FRUA present features (since I have been using my memory of FRUA which is not as complete as it used to be). Plus I might find that there are some awesome mods in FRUA that should be converted to DC, and I could become a go-to guy for doing conversions.

Really, since its a small program, I just wanna play around with it again; too

I do have it up and running.

I use an old version of UAShell, but I'm sure the newer ones work the same. (It works well, so I haven't bothered updating.)

It's all pretty straight-forward, at least as pertains to running games. One nice thing about it is that it is very well documented.

Just let me know what you need help with and I'll do my best to answer.

Where do I get a copy of UA Shell (preferrably the most recent)? I asked in the UA yahoo list yesterday, but I haven't been answered yet and I'm impatient

also, what directory does FRUA have to be installed in (or does this matter)?

FRUA can be in whatever directory you like. As for UAShell - check out the UA Archive at http://frua.rosedragon.org/index.html and choose the browse files option and look in the 'pc' folder. It will be under utilities and you want the file called uashellc.zip (stands for UAShell complete). It's the last one that David Knott worked on (he created UAShell). I've heard that there is a more recent version but I don't know where to get it or what it does. The one available works pretty darn good.

Well, I got FRUA working and I'm having a feeling of nostalgia/Deja vu. This was an awesome program to begin with, even before hacks and someone deciding to "upgrade" to 32 bit art in a windows environment.

I just started poking around in FRUA. As for UA Shell, the link you gave me doesn't go anywhere so I browsed around the rosedragon page on my own (this is where I continually get quotes for tricks from UANLs). But I guess I'll have to wait since I cannot find anything that has UAShell in its description.
I find these links, none of which have a utils or utilities folder:
http://frua.rosedragon.org/dir.htm (parent dir)
http://frua.rosedragon.org/pc/ (still no utils)

oh well, I'm sure the ppl at the UA yahoo list can inform me of any changes. As for now, you gave me the key to the city with the page that gave me access to FRUA in the first place (kinda sucked having the 3rd FRUA disk unable to install due to file corruption, so again THANKS )

ps, this is sooo schweeet!

Sorry about the link, I added and "l" on the end.

I'm pretty sure that if you did a search in the yahoo FRUA group for uashell, you would find what you're looking for.
