The exception to this in the Temple Ruins quest is, ofcourse, the Symbol of Amaunator. But if you have the Item Upgrade mod, the symbol can infact serve a very useful purpose after it opens the door for you
Oh, and the Shadow Dragon ward stone isn`t used up because you might want to avoid big and ugly altogether going to the Shade Lord, then avoid it again on the way back; and come back a little later to kill it.

Well, it isn't of much use to go back through the Ruins after defeating the Shade Lord. If one does that, it is normally to kill that Dragon, I reckon.

But you can`t exit the map from where the Shade Lord is; so you have to go back past big and ugly, which gets kindof hard if the wardstone is used up passing through the area
Plus, if you think carefully, you will notice that you actually have to speak to someone, or use something, for any object to be automatically taken from or given to you. You never use up an item killing something (only exception is charge items, such as wands), or get something automatically in your inventory because you go into, say, Merella's Cabin.
Thus, I would argue that the Shadow Dragon ward stone HAS to be a permanant thing, purely because of the way the Infinity Engine works.

mmm....Actually, you can go from the bit where the shadoe lord is back to anyother world map if the altar has been destroyed. I do, regularly.

Kaltia is correct. You can easily exit the area from where the Shade Lord is. Just go a bit south, and then exit to the east (closest) or west.
