I think Variol's got your best answer. Find an archery club in the area and ask for thoughts and ideas. They'll not only tell you how and where to get started, they may also have folks looking to get rid of old gear....

Larry, I'd hate to be a chipmunk in your yard.

Archery's a charming sport though, strength and skill coupled with that renaissance fair experience, particularly if you do go for wood. I'd be sure to at least talk to a professional as that can help you train more efficiently, avoid injuries and enjoy the whole thing better.
So yes, you got some good advice already.

Thanks for all the help, guys! Yeah, I have a Dick's in the area but never knew they sold bows and stuff. Will go next weekend and check them out. I have enough space here at home to practice at the beginning, but will need wider area when I get going at it.

Yeah, Legolas...I am looking for something with more "kick" than the blowgun. (I still have those pics, btw.)
