Actually, a ranger/cleric is nice, especially if you plan to play the character in the next game.

If you are planning on taking your cleric into bg2 dont bother, there are plenty of spells that turn your cleric into a fighter there.

I know for damn sure that a Fighter/Cleric is better than a plain Cleric....as long as he's Human. A Multiclassed Fighter/Cleric, like Yeslick, is perfectly good, but he's pouring half his XP into a class that's not going to do him any good. Say, when you start out, you put 2 points into Blunt and 2 into Missile, because you know where that +2 Warhammer is. All well and good... but multiclassed Fighters can't put more than 2 points into any weapon. Bummer, since half your experience is now wasted on learning Spiked Weapons.
The much better method is to build a Human Fighter with 18 WIS, and then dual to Cleric at Lev. 2, 3, or 6, which are the levels at which you gain weapon points. From then on, all your experience is spent learning more happy happy healing spells, and when you regain those Fighter points, you're one heck of a powerhouse Cleric.

I wouldn't know a damn thing about BG2, but playing a Ranger in BG1 and dualing to Cleric sounds like a good idea to me.

P.S. I have NEVER Turned Undead. Why would I take one of my good melee fighters and have him stand there limp, hoping to win a few pansy-ass skeletons to my side? Does ANYONE Turn Undead?
