Well, of course it depends on where you live. I was talking about my own country, where you don't get sweaty this time of year unless you've been up to no good.
Of course when it's hot, in the summer, it's a completely different picture. Then I'm usually up to showering twice daily too. People who smell of sweat are awful, I wasn't talking about that at all. There's a difference between being hygienic (scrubbing your skin too often is less hygienic since you destroy your skin's natural defenses) and smelling nice. Some people need to shower more often in order to smell clean, but not necessarily to become more hygienic. I am always cold BTW, when there's a heat wave I finally warm up a little, and I hardly ever sweat so that may be why I feel this way.
Oh and the cold water thing does SO work! It closes up the... bugger, I couldn't think of the word earlier, that's why I left it out... damn, what are they called?? The little thingies? The things fish and snakes have too... blast it.
Anyway, it closes them up so your hair won't get damaged from toweling it dry and brushing it when wet (then again, you could just not brush or towel it dry, just wrap it in a towel and leave it as I always do)

I think the word you are looking for is scales Mel. Hmmm didn't know hair was structured like that ....

Thanks NS!!
Yeah, that was the word I was looking for - hair is built up from tiny overlapping scale-like things. They open up when soaked in hot water, and close when the water's cold, thus making the hair more smooth.

Edit: Oh, and I've thought of one other situation in which I take multiple showers a day: if you've been out and your hair smells of smoke - ugh!

Does NOT!! LOL, well I can't tell the difference anyway. Could be my hair is so naturally perfect I don't need cheap tricks like cold water... . When I was last at the hairdresser he told me my hair was almost perfect to style because the strands are cylindrical rather than elliptical - um yes of course. Just confirming what I'd always suspected

I noticed your new pic on Stealthy's says your have shorter hair, Mel! Still looked quite long to me - how does it look? I actually got mine all chopped off in January; it's at my shoulders and layered. It's funny, after it being so long for so long, I run my brush through it and expect it to go for a certain time and it stops way early!

When I'm in civilisation I shower once a day (well, at night actually). But over the past couple of months I've been doing alot of travelling and tent-living and so don't get such frequent access to showers. At first I felt kinda filthy going unwashed for several days at a stretch, but to be honest you get used to the 'old sweat' feeling on your skin after a day or two. I think alot of the 'dirty' feeling is psychological, and as I think Mel pointed out a little bit of old sweat isn't all that unhygienic at all. However, I do use a whole bunch of deodorant ('shower in a can' ) so that I don't smell bad, that's just considerate for both myself and for the people that I'm close to. I really do enjoy a nice hot shower on a winter's night though (or a cold one in summer), so if anything I shower once a day just for the pleasure of it.

Oh, and Mel and Aelia, might I suggest a no-holds-barred, hair-whipping, nail scratching catfight in order to decide whose opinion is correct? Preferably whilst in the shower in order to lend it relevance to the debate. Naturally I will be on-hand to film the event for the sake of historical documentation, you understand

Shower on an almost daily basis, while washing my hair in the evening as well whenever I've used any kind of hair gel that day - else it'll just end up on your pillow, which isn't exactly the most hygienic place in your home in the first place. Tend to find a balance between hot and warm water - especially for my face I tend to use relatively cold water (not cooler-than-being-cool water, though ).

Wow so far I am the only person to vote for colder then average... it all depends on the heat outside, its been boiling hot for the last week so I have been having straight cold showers. In cold weather I have showers that could burn the skin of most backs

I tried that theory shadowhound. When I was on holiday it was boiling hot everyday, so I thought, Il just have a cold shower, that lasted for about 2 seconds, then I decided i was cold enough and turned it to hot!
