I've been toying with the idea of messing around with Linux a bit.

Felix, can you recommend a good distro for download that is easy on newbies? [img]smile.gif[/img] Most of my hardware is fairly mainstream, nothing oddball.

Hehe, The main reason I was originally interested in Linux was because I used to be into the whole "Coding" thing, and linux seemed like the perfect place to nurture that interest, but I am also a very heavy gamer, and thats what really pulled me away from it (plus I got over wanting to write code) and becasue of my job, I have to be on top of the Windows build and its problems, so it just seems right that I stick with it.

One day I may go back and check out Linux again, but the previous times have just been dissapoinments, but in no way means they are bad, just that I didn't find it very usefull, and if you play alot of ames, you might not either.

Then again, as Felix said, there is always the dual boot option, and there are plenty if ways to do it

So yeah, by all means, give it a try. It doesnt hurt anyone (except maybe your bandwidth) and you will never know, until you give it a go [img]smile.gif[/img]

I would suggest Fedora Core if only beacuse, of all the distros I have tried, this one was the easiest to set up, and had drivers for (most of) my hardware

Then again, i'm sure Felix would know of a better distro for newbies [img]smile.gif[/img]

Yeah, it's designed for buisnesses small and large, and NOT for the home user, but being a TechNet Plus subscriber, I get it free anyways

Thanks for your answers, Felix and HT. Those internet speed stats ARE impressive. But my reasons for curiosity are similar to HT's - learning about coding. But the simple fact that this has nothing to do with my profession tells me that i'm probably dreaming. In this case, i think i'm better off with the devil i know.

Just one last question: AutoCad. Does it run better/faster/at all under Linux?

Not in the least, most of the people I know that like coding, either have no jobs, or jobs in completely different areas. All you need is an interest, and be able to focus on the subject (I often find myself drifting off when trying to learn )but by all means, have a go. The way I see it, the only way Linux will ever be comparable to windows(I dont mean that in a bad way, I mean that in a compatability way, ie, games and such) is if more people jump on board and code new stuff
