SPOILER . . . . !!!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Alot of good tips here so I will add only one. Fighters usually have fairly low intelligence unless you were willing to spend a long time on your rolls, or used an editor to alter it. At any rate you should have amassed a fair amount of "Potions of Intelligence". You can have your tanks drink those and their intelligence will jump up into the "20's", that will help them be able to take more hits from "Flayers" without dying so quickly. |

I usually cast chaotic commands and/or hit and run nukings. Cloud kill and Fireball work wonders!

cloudkill and fireball from WANDS work well, otherwise the flayers mag resist will block 90% of the attacks, protection from magic weapons will keep your fighters from being hit by the Illithids (not sure if it's a caster only spell tho, if so then your mage will be immune)
cast chaotic commands on your fighters, and have them drink lots of potions of genius, and potions of mind focusing to recover from any int drain they do take, also using wave attacks, sending one or two tanks on a 'thid then backing them out to let summons/other tanks attack, then switch, the wait is usually enough to let your first group heal from the mind drain and then go back in to relieve the second so they can heal. also, if you have ToB the (greater) deathblow HLA will kill them in one hit, with no save, although you're most likely too low level to think about using it, it does exist as a useful option when you run into them in ToB (only in one spot IIRC)

The best tactic I found was to be in an enclosed room, summon 5 guys, quickly open a door to a mind flayer room and send 'em in, and when three died start summoning again so you'd have another batch of 5 ready at about the same time that the last two die, and keep 'em coming. If you run out of summoning spells then close all the doors, rest, and start the process again. Works quite well since the mind flayers don't heal themselves.
