Quality will not be an issue regardless of cable, simply how fast the drive is able to send/receive data (use buffer underrun protection and you'll be fine).

3: for recording to analog then digital, VHS tapes are analog (unless you have a Digital video recorder on the camera), thus the reason for quality loss when making copies, as soon as they are on your PC (or going into the recorder) they will become Digital

for #4... check out the manufacturer's site and it's technical forums, I'm sure users have posted ways to get around that, and if not, post your question, and they will most likely answer you. (that or the guy making the review tried to illegally copy a protected video and had an axe to grind)

since the camera is digital you shouldn't notice a problem if you connect if to your PC and use some video capture software to transfer it (then burn to DVD) at least that's what I do here at work.

I am thinking about going ahead and getting that video capture software for the PC, and I suppose I do not need the firewire since the USB would probably handle the work. What I do need then, is that software you mentioned. My DVD maker comes with a CD that has Nero Express 6.0. If I loaded that onto my PC, would that be good enough? Is there a better one that you could recommend?

I want to be able to have the option of loading video I record from my camcorder onto an external HDD instead of always having to make DVDs to preserve the footage.

Nero 6 might work for capturing video... I have heard from our AV geeks that the new version of Roxio Easy CD Creator does, so it's reasonable to assume Nero will allow it. Did any software come with the camera?

What I use at work for video capture is Pinnacle Studio 8 (which came with my All in Wonder card) and Adobe Premier. www.download.com should have a freeware or shareware software package you could download, or get the free trial of Premier from adobe
