You will be making a multiplayer game to begin with:

You start by pregenerating six characters (though most people here would tell you only to make five so that you can pick up NPC's for their quests).

Then you create a multiplayer game and make sure all characters are assigned to the same player.

After having successfully started the game and watched Irenicus do his little dance save the game.

To conclude the process exit the game. Go to the mpsave folder and cut out or copy the saved game.

Then place the saved game in the ordinary savegame folder in order to avoid slow loading times.

Beware of using Shadowkeeper on such a false multiplayer game. If you tamper with the savefile it will almost invariably cause Baldur's Gate to crash.

One of the cool things about creating your own parties is that you can make themed parties. I am currently playing a bit around with a party only made by "short folk" (dwarwes, gnomes and halflings).

If you want to tamper with your characters (to give them spiffy colours for example) do it on the character files before you import them.
