Well, change the name then, national champions isn't the same as worldchampions. And that goes for the NBA, NHL, and NFL as well. You can't declare yourself champions of the world after winning the national championship, that's retarded.

Let me put this in another way then....the Yokohama Hoochies win the national Japanese pingpong championships, and immediately declare themselves worldchampions, because they feel that compared to Japanese pingpongplayers, the rest of the world utterly sucks.

How would you perceive that ?

In sports ? I think "a bit" isn't exactly the right description, seeing as you automatically become worldchampions if you win the national hockey, football, baseball, and basketball leagues.
