Be prepared to do stupid things if you play an MMO.

It's 2.15am and I spent the last hour waiting for a spawn for my epic quest.

I'm totally nackered, but go to bed pretty damn pleased with myself.

MMOGS are an interesting breed. They're an exercise in getting as many people as possible to waste their time simultaneously, and keep coming back for more. I haven't played WOW for like 14 months, but I had fun for a time, and it didn't really require much of a time investment for it to be fun, because the lower levels are actually entertaining. Plus, and I don't know if this is still possible, on the Role-Playing servers when I played you could actually have people who were role-playing but not in a gamey way. They wouldn't yell at you for not using your skills a certain way because they have 2 level 60's with that class and know more than you. After all, what does their character know about yours?

That said, I'm not even considering giving any of these games any more time and money until Warhammer Online.

Another MMOG that's worth considering is Ragnarok Online(RO). You can download the game for free and play it for free for 15 days. Up until then you can opt to pay 10 dollars per month.

The game is anime like. If you like japanase sytle cartoon you'll probably like the cuteness of the characters. Graphic is okay though obviously couldn't defeat the wowness of WOW. The music is nice though.

This game is mostly about farming and grinding. You'll be grinding for levels and for items and money. Now this is probably the biggest cons this game have , some people will find this boring because you'll be doing this for quite a long long long time. Good thing about this though unlike WOW where you'll probably need to learn Chinese to chat with the farmers. In RO when you are farming, people will come up to you and say Hi!. From then on you'll be chatting and chatting while farming and without you knowing it, walla! you gain a level.

Yes, when you are bored with your farming. You can just go to town and sit there. Sooner or later some people will come up to you to strike a conversation with you. So you'll be making friends faster in RO. This is one thing I like about this game.

There's no pking in this game so there'll be no 6 year olds who want to own your head. If you feel like pvping you can go to pvp rooms and pvp all you like. Unlike WOW where you'll need to wait for hours and hours just to get inside the pvp room. In RO you'll be inside the pvp room the moment you click the pvp npc.

During a certain time in a week there'll be guild war aka War of Emperium. Here guilds will try to attack/defend a castle for 2 hours. If you manage to get a castle at the end of the 2 hours. If the castle belongs to your guild you can gain treasure from the chest boxes. Also in town your guild's emblem will be shown for all to see. This is one of the few things why I'm still playing RO.

People in RO are generally nice and if there's people that trying to be jerks you can report them to the gm to have them banned. Yes, you can do that in RO as the gm here do their job seriously unlike WOW where the gm won't do a thing to jerks.

Can't decide? Why don't you try it since you can download it for free and play it for free for a few days. you won't lose a thing.

After spending a bit of time at 60 I thought the same os Loftis, but now I'm feeling more like Luvian. The game is designed specifically for you to burn time, I've spent countless doing, well, nothing.

I would urge you to at least try RO, EVE and Guild Wars. I've played all of them, and they're pretty fun.
Eve is a great game, but you have to learn a lot if you start new and it might be a bit frustrating since *everything* needs a specific set of skills and those have pre-requisites which have their own pre-reqs... But it's a great game because of a dynamic economy, and smart players can make a huge amount of money fast if they play it right. Don't like trading? Become a pirate and ambush traders and other players. Don't like that? Start a corporation(guild) and mine and manufacture items to sell to other players. You can spend the entire game spending almost zero time in combat if you want to.
RO Is fun, but Ihaven't played in awhile so can't remember much about it. Although illegal, the private servers far exceed the global...
GW has the instanced outdoors and dungeons, but I always enjoy wandering the wilderness killing stuff, happening upon other players and helping them out, grouping, etc. Can't do that in this game.

A warning about EVE. Once you start, you WILL NOT GO BACK TO YOUR LIFE! EVE IS LIFE! Best way to say that, is that some of the corporate wars, take overs, market declines and whatevers have been featured on The Times, BBC, CNN, SkyNews and whatnot. Seriously, that game is about as large as games get. I'd play it, but I value my social life too much.
Give GW a try, out of all that's been suggested, it's the most economical game(and you will love it).

Yeah, at one point I actually thought I had the self-discipline that you do and quit EVE for 9 months, but guess once what I'm playing constantly now...

But, it's cool too. What Luvian didn't tell you was that while doing those long raids, you are also doing 8 or more very cool, very different, very interesting, and quite difficult boss fights.

I mean, if you don't like strategy and cooperation and tactics and pre-planning, then of course a MMO raid isn't for you.
Yeah, maybe the first few times, but when you've killed them 20+ times each, they are centainly not cool or interesting, just routine and 8 wasted hours for a possible piece of loot that's going to be outdated in a patch or two. How many hours have you raided so far? It's fun at first, but soon you'll realise it's a big waste of time.

We were 40 people all the time, almost always 5-6 rogues minimum, and I still managed to get 3 epics from Garr alone. At the end, we disenchanted most Molten Core loot. I can't even remember how many pieces or rogue or warlock epics we just disenchanted, or that polearm that drop every other raid. It was to the point that most people passed up on most epics because they were a waste of raid points. That show how much we raided.

My brother, that was 52 or so at the time and had just seen me raid every once in a while when we played in a LAN refused to do a run in my place, saying there's no way he was going to do something that boring. My best friend needed only one run once he hit 60 to realise how boring it was. I wish it hadn't taken me hundread of hours to realise it to...

The only strategy to most raid bosses is following the onscreen instructions from the raid leader. "Attack now" "Stop attacking" "Stand back" "follow" "use ranged" "melee". The whole thing could be done using bots.
