Spells like Sequencer and Contingency would really help you in situations like that, also you might try experimenting with the different party formations on offer I had the same problems as you in my game but I found it easier to use different formations in different circumstances.

Thanks for the advice Raznar. I don't think I've found any contingency scrolls yet but when I do I'll give it a try.
