I tried twice to play on dial-up but boot-up took about 10 mins and then taking about 3 or 4 steps took about 2 mins each. Would this be only a function of the dial-up, cos my system specs would be well in advance of minimum (512 MB Ram and 128 MB GE T1 4200)? Is there something else I should check for?
It's true theres a new streaming technology running on GW however it also sounds like a video lag. Update to the 66.xx drivers if you haven't already (or downgrade). Dial up should be fine, only lagging in areas with large amounts of people. Try reinstalling if the problems persists, making sure no AV progs or anything of the like are hogging your ram.

Thanks for the replies - they give me something to work on next weekend.

Hivetyrant - I did the download / upgrade thing - I missed mentioning that - that took about 40 mins on dial-up and went fairly well I thought. So that is not the issue then.

66.xx drivers? OK - been a while since I played a new game so every chance mine are out of date - will check that out.

Curiouser and criouser said Alice

OK - I tried to start quild wars with task manager running. My CPU was opearting at 7% and I had 270 MB of free ram. I started the game and the CPU went instantly to 100% and pretty much stayed there. The free ram was still about 270 MB but the system just choked at the CPU - odd.

What happens is very symptomatic of a CPU on steroids - I have to click on the password box and wait 90 secs for a cursor to get there. Then I type in my password and I wait another 90 secs for the row of dots to appear and the message to attempt connection. Then I wait again on any occasion that I click a menu in character creation.

Clearly my CPU shouldn't be in meltdown on starting the game, but what could be causeing that? Nothing in the technical help for the game gives me any clue.

I haven't played with my video drivers yet, and am reluctant to do too much until I find someone that has come up against this issue themselves.

Cheers
Davros

OK - I have established that my video drivers are a tad out of date (like April 2003 - but hey, I haven't played a new game since June 2004), but the latest driver 78 series is a whopping 20 MB (so I moiht wait till next weekend when I have broadband). Tell me though SpiritWarrior - why did you recommend a 66 version that is 26 MB - just wondering why you recommend it over the latest one?

I sure hope these are the source of my trouble - otherwise I am still casting about for suggections.

These drivers seem to work well for the TI and FX 5200 cards. The later ones have nothing in them that benefits your card anyways, as they support the new PCX ones mostly. Some (including myself) experience graphical glitches with the newest drivers so these are 'safe'.

What drivers were you using btw? Don't be afraid to change them, nothing a reinstall can't fix. Make sure you have no antialiasing or Anisotropic filtering on as these will choke such a card up to bits. Turn these off in the nvidia settings window and in the game also (set to 'off' and not 'application controlled'). Put all settings to low (game and nvidia tab) and start from there, increasing each one gradually to test performance. The cpu being hogged up could easily be due to your card struggling so don't necessarily seperate the two as different issues.

Try it, DL the 66.93 drivers and that way you either can rule out the vidcard or possibly fix your problem. On dial up it should take you an hour or so to DL 28mb from the nvidia site. I've done it so you'll be fine.

Also GW doesn't like an overclocked CPU. If our CPU is overclocked it could explain the 100%issue.

Vid divers updated and nix . Did all your suggestions with the settings and still no go.

The screens just paint themselves in layer by layer and the speed is painful slow to click or anything - and this is just in the loading screen - looking for more ideas (nothing else running in background - Guild Wars just grabs 97% of CPU usage and just chokes on it).

Don't know how to check for an overclocked CPU, but mine is a P4 2 GHz straight store bought machine - no upgrading.

Any and all clues are welcome

You're running in 32 bit color I assume? Check the GW readme for troubleshoots, see if maybe this is a known issue. Have you also tried disabling sound to see if your card is lagging it up? I mean disabling your soundcard in the system menu not just turning the speakers off. Also, you have the latests version of directx?

Edit: As a final attempt, run the Direct X tests. Start, Run, type dxdiag, press Enter, go through the tabs and look at the reports at the bottom, run the sound and video tests, update any drivers it suggests at component manufacturer’s website. Before you leave the tests go to 'save all info' and save it to notepad, paste the info. here so we can have a thorough look at your specs.

Long shot but try setting colors to 32 bit and make sure screen resolution matches GW res. If no change then we can safely say your vid is fine . Have you tried leaving it for awhile on the first screen? I know GW downloads on login, and uses a little lightning icon in the top right corner to let you know it is receiving files. Let it stay there until the symbol goes away, see if that works.

After this I don't really know what to tell you, could be many things but your best bet is contacting GW support at that stage.
