I heard that the ceiling was made of STYROFOAM!!! If that is the case, I blame both club owner and the band (I mean lets use some common sense!), I mean if you saw the footage that the one camera guy took, the "pyrotechnics" were basically these wall set torches that blazed about two feet high, right up against the wall, and heating up the ceiling. I'm not surprised one bit that the styrofoam ceiling went up in a blaze so quickly that very few were able to get out before being overcome by the smoke (in the footage I saw the flames hadn't YET hit the ceiling, but thin smoke was accumulating already over the patrons. Once the ceiling caught fire, the smoke got unbelievably thick and dark).

Personally, I hold both the club and the band responsible, no matter what the investigation finds, and here's why(please keep in mind, these are just my opinions. By posting them, I'm not dismissing anyone else's feelings, just stating my own):
I'm not going to get into if the band asked for permission or not, we don't know.
I fault the band and their crew because whether you asked for permission or not, you are taking resposibility on yourself when you use pyrotechnics that you will use them as safe as possible. When you walk into the club you'll be preforming at and you see that there are no sprinklers, a low ceiling, and styrofoam on the ceiling, it is your responsibility to say "Well, it doesn't look safe to me, I don't think I'll use the pyros"
I fault the club, because it's your business, and therefore you have a responsibility to make sure that your patrons will be safe. You do this by a) putting in sprinklers, I don't care if you were "grandfathered" in or not, it's just common sense! and b) keeping an eye on what the act preforming in your club is setting up. If you're not sure about something, ask. If they didn't know those things were pyros, they should have asked.

As far as the other club owners, it could be true, but then refer to my last paragraph for my feelings about them. It's also possible that they're saying this to cover their own butts in case the investigation sends officials to their clubs where they don't have those permits either, so that they can say "We didn't give them permission". I don't know, I'm just saying it's a possibility.

Either way, it's sad that so many died because of lack of saftey and forethought on so many others. Just awful

Found a video that covers a lot of what happened, with footage of the fire starting inside the Club as well:

Just scroll down a little bit more than half-way down, look for the "Free Video" on the left (you'll know it because it shows a picture of the fire)

Man, that is so sad and tragic.
Bad news for the band or whoever. It seems they used the same entrance at the Stone Pony club without permission. Jesus, that is just so dangerous, especially with no extra fire precautions being taken it would seem.

Tragic..

God. 96 people.. I saw the video they played on CNN. Geez, Where the hell were the sprinkler's and maybe some fire extinguishers!?!? This could have been stopped before it spread.

Exactly what I was thinking. This whole thing about being "grandfathered" in so they don't need to put in sprinklers is rediculous. I don't care that it's going to cost X amount to bring an old building up to code, if you're going to have a business, you have an obligation to keep your patrons safe, law or not.
The whole thing is just one tragic misjudgement on top of another.
