ummm why do YOU have to pay for anything? I would expect any "security" garage I was paying for security to pick up the bill for damages incurred while my car was under their supposed "care".

That would be an American situation Magik. Not Australian. If the garage had to pay then the rates would go up due to the huge insurance costs garages had to pay. It'd get passed on to the customer. Kind of like the US health system...

Really the only one at fault is the thief.

On a similar note it's remarkable that there's so much discussion about how this company or that company is responsible for the WTC damage. "If the builders had done this, then it wouldn't have fallen" etc etc etc.

But really, the situation staring them in the face is this. If Al Qaeda wanted to bring the towers down, they would have. If it needed four planes instead of two, then that's what would have happened.

Put simply, it's the perpetrator who is responsible for a crime, not the person meant to be defending/protecting/providing security. Security will only go so far.

Yorick, I must eb missing somethig here...it sounds to me like Memsie was PAYING a garage to keep his car safe (Hence the title Security Garage) If that is the case then it should be their JOB and RESPONSIBILITY to ensure the "security" of his car no? if not...why advertise as a "Security Garage"? Why pay them at all?

Edit: I agree the only guilty party is the thief, this does not aleviate the people selling security of the responsibility of failing in their payed for task.

You will probably find that even if they call themselves a "Security Garage", they will have some sort of contractual clause limiting their liability.

That's awful, Mario! Great way to spend a day, too. I have a friend who had 100 dollars of glass repairs on his truck when a thief broke in to steal a 25 dollar radio.... figures, huh?

No no no...when I say security garage, I mean a garage which requires a magic zapper to get in - it doesn't have actual security or anything. How they got into the garage is a mystery.

Yorick, it's actually the garage under my apartment block in McMahons Point, which is not a suburb where you'd expect to find people casing garages to break into cars - it's normally very safe and quite affluent.

I spoke to the police (they had to fingerprint my car and found ONE fingerprint - I hope it's from the basturd that did this ) and they told me that there were a LOT of break-ins in garages around our area last night - which is the first time in years it's happened. Seems like the perps were looking for cash and stereos.

It's so infuriating because you feel helpless and can't do a thing about it.

This is exactly how Aussie "security garages" work.

"The Company takes no responsibility for..." etc

I think Memnoch may be talking about the garage at his appartment building however, in which case the term 'security' is used cosmetically - for garages and appartments. ie: The garage has a locking roller door. The appartments have deadlocked main doors and an intercom...
TO get in to the garage, theif must have broken in, not merely strolled in. That's about the extent of "security" in Aussie dwellings.

EDIT: And I see I wasn't mistaken.

Somebody tried to lockpick my car's door open last week, and of course ended up completely destroying the central locking system. Take a guess how great it feels to keep the car there in the darkness with its doors unlocked? I cannot afford fixing it at the moment. Gladly this is populated area, if everyone whom saw a criminal would report of it to the police, that could majorly decrease the crime rate. Same thing happened last autumn, although then the rat caused much more damage. Poor kids.

In short, your car isn´t safe anywhere nowadays. You can even find step by step instructions as how to efficiently break into car from the internet.

I just went through the same thing. As a matter of fact, I'm filing my insurance claim as soon as their office opens up. I got one broken window ($300), messed up dash, and stolen stereo/cd player. The police said that 11 other people in my "quiet little suburb" got jacked the same night as mine. What I really loved was the letter I got from the police. "It has been determined there are no active leads to follow at this time." The good news is that I am now armed with a pamphlet. I guess that I'm supposed to tack the pamphlet on the side of my house and when the next thief comes by, it will scare him away. As our playa ex-president used to say, "I feel your pain.".

I hope your week gets better.
