I don't know, TL. I suppose things may be different on your side of the pond.
I've seen the last few days of 4th edition and own the rulebooks for 5th and 6th, but I can't say the main rules have changed that much. Although it is true there have been a lot of minor rules popping into and out of existance (like overrun rules, the general's death no longer causing panic tests throughout the force, slightly different rules for weapons etc.), that are usually pointed out to you just as you are in the middle of a good gloat because you think those rules don't exist and boy is your opponent in for it now.
Whether or not you need a subscription depends on the kind of gamer you are. I only ever play a handful of people since noone seems to think placing a GW in Groningen would be profitable (yes, there are more people living in the Netherlands than those in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, particularly to the north and south of there. But the south can wait...). As a result I know their forces, and if they do start a new one I can borrow rulebooks, see it grow and not be totally surprised once they reach 1000 or 2000 points. On the other hand, if you're a tournament player, it's only fair you 'need to' keep up with developments. You can't expect to just walk in and win a tournament if you don't come prepared. I doubt I'd win the olympics without training...

As for the prices of the miniatures, that was unfortunate. First they migrated into bigger boxes (two or three a blister instead of three or four, for the same price), later on they went up a pound. Part of it will doubtlessly be due to inflation, and compared to the way prices in restaurants shot up when they introduced the euro here, it's nothing.

The miniatures are closer to 3 mm than 4mm. I measured

No discounts is also not true, especially when starting a new army. At least, that's the way it is in Europe.
I also fail to see how running a factory without suffering great expenses is a bad thing...

That said, it is true Warhammer is more expensive a hobby than stamp collecting (unless you want to go for the really rare and expensive ones). It's also true that you will face people who come along with little knowledge of the rules, or unpainted miniatures, or both. And it's true the hobby keeps changing, which isn't neccesarily a bad thing.
But the thing is, you don't have to fight anyone you don't want to. You don't have to agree to play someone with ghostly white, black, grey or mettalic figures. You don't have to fight someone who has no idea what the M in the profiles means.
But it's useful to say so beforehand, so others can keep in mind what you expect. There are a lot of people who do know the rules, who do bring a painted army, and who do supply the milk and cookies

Oh, and the 'epic' warhammer's called Warmaster

Yeah, Warmaster rocks.

Don't get me wrong, I love the game. Oh, I must inform you my army is only 2/3 painted. Time time time time - it takes me forever to paint a fig. But, I do pretty good work. I'll take some pictures and post 'em (if they come out okay - my digital camera is crappy).

I don't know much about warhammer, but a lot of my friends play it. They occasionally bring a warhammer magazine to the lunch table. I saw a picture of a "Bring out the dead" cart someone had made like the one in Monty Python and the holy grail. It really looked a lot like the one in the movie!

heh, dont know much about warhammer either, but it's nice to collect them figures,(got an army, some need to be painted though)but I have never played with them, only painted(painting Imrik and his dragon was specially fun) maybe I should play someday, but it's difficult to meet people who play it,because everyone plays with their friends and they dont take newbies in so easily
