Nope still not working. When testing Direct3D I get "You aborted the test by pushing a key" or something . Looks like a format is in order. I´ll get rid of NTFS though. At least something.

Edit: Could it be older drivers messing things up?

that's a possibility. Before reformatting (cuz it's a pain in the arse) try removing all the cards except your vid card, and use the standard vga driver for the card - test. Then use the nvidia driver - test. Put each card back in system one at a time - test after each card.

I recommend you keep NTFS for the security of your files. I also recommend that you run your normal use of your PC with an account that does NOT have admin privlages. Use the admin acct only for test (like this), configuring, or installing new software. While you may not keep sensitive files on your pc, hax0rs love to find minimally protected PCs - then they use YOUR machine to conduct mischief.

Hit it with a hammer! A big one! Maybe that will knock some sense into it!

Willow, when I got my new video card and I was looking for newer XP drivers online, I found that the newest certified drivers screwed things up badly.

I used 30.87(which Windows Update offered) until 40.72 came out, and I was able to get it from the nVidia site. I don't know if that helps, but I did have others here tell me that they weren't able to use the first round of 40.xx drivers without taking a serious performance hit.

So how should you proceed?

First, a review of the drivers in question.

Second, the use of a hammer mentioned by LofA(being careful not to damage the cyber Satanic homestead).

Third, reformatting(which may be increased in difficulty by number 2).

Sorry your stuck spending Thanksgiving with a sickly computer, but lots of turkey will solve the problem.

EDIT - Just for clarification, I mean you eating lots of turkey, not shoving it in your computer.

My graphics card works no question about it. I have played some Arx Fatalis with no problems this morning. And Ar xneeds Direct3D support. It comes and goes though so this is a Windows error. The hubby has been ordered to reformat and install everything on my computer this sunday . LoA I have to try your advice LLAO! It´s strange that Direct3D suddenly works when I threaten the computer with a reformat.

The hubby went through my register yesterday and found 13 errors too. 2 caused by me BUT 11 caused by Norton Utilities 2003!! No more of that program for me

Edit: Ronn I´ve already had my thanksgiving . But if you´re offering turkey I´ll be glad to drop by and have some lol

btw the very latest geforce drivers despite increasing performance 25 percent blah blah blah are very unstable, go for the next ones down where possible, some people i know have had major problems with the new ones, its always best with any release to go for the 2nd most recent one unless its known as well to have problems, thats what i do, i try and avoid untested brand new drivers, take millenium operating system as a case in point, released earlier but its new O/S so everyone rushed to buy it, then boy did i get alot of fcked machines coming in for me to fix and im still getting them even now, whereas 98 2nd ed is so much more stable and still used by the majority of people, lots of people also upgraded straight to xp when it came out and are back to win98 yet again because they had enough of its problems. Tell you what though bill gates makes me money the more machines that eff up the more i have to fix and the more money i make so much as i want to lower him gently into a pool of acid he does actually keep me in the job

oh btw norton utilities is a great program so long as you dont install it, use it from CD and it will fix some errors that other programs cant but if you install it your asking for trouble as it causes all sorts of software conflicts, always run utility programs from CD if you can get away with it

Thanks for the info Grungi. The new Nvidia drivers work perfectly though so it´s not those who cause the trouble. I´m guessin Windows or Norton systemworks/internet security. I´ll do a format anyways since I want to be able to run programs in compatibility mode. And after the format I´ll install Norton 2002 instead since that never caused me any problems. Weee my computer is working again. A destroyed hard drive, a messy windows installation and a ruined registry was my problem. My Direct3D support is working again now. Running Win98 at the moment with dx6 lol. I´m off to upgrade some now.

Note: Hubby put in a brand new hard drive from ExcelStor. I don´t know much about its stability yet but it´s QUIET! Completely silent is a better description. The fan makes 4-5 times more sound than the hard drive
