Hmm, I see your point, I guess I would be pretty pissed as well if they started putting up displays in my home.

Popups are evil.
They block your view of the page, often spawn 5 more when you close them, and use system resources. Banners are a necesary evil - sites have to get money *some* how; but popups are just plain stupid. They can potentially loose a site traffic. |

Oh I never disagreed with you, but someone has to argue for the other side.

IMHO it's not that I walk into a shop and try to take down the displays. It's more like not answering the door, when ther's a pedlar trying to sell me something...
I'd also wish I could stop them put all those advertisements in my letter-box which in the end only fill up my wastebasket. I think the point is, when I enter a shop i probably have the intention to buy something. And even then, if the vendors ask me, if they could be of any help, from time to time I tell them kindly "no, thanks. just looking around" and voilà - pop-up-vendor closed until I contact them myself. I didn't find this feature on the Internet yet...

Personally, if I was to give an example relating to real life, it would be this:
Just think that as soon as you entered a shop, the vendor started shoving display in your face. You tell him to stop, but instead, he come up with another display, and tell 3 others vendore to help him. And before you know it, you have them all after you, so you leave, but they still follow you around and try to prevent you from leaving the shop by blocking your way, and closing the door. And as if it was not enough, they put some counter on you. Worse than that, some of them are even trying to make you agree to them following you around in your personal life with a camera, trying to make you believe that all he want to do is give me a clock, or some other useless things like that. Seller: "Hey! I have a good idea! Let me follow you around everywhere you go! I'll tell you what time it is every time you ask (And I'll report your every actions to my boss, and also keep reminding you to buy my stuff every time certains keywords are said... Of course, I'm not telling you this...)" Personally, I would have no problems with popups if the people using them where not all trying to abuse us. As it is, you visit a website, and you get a popups with no way to close it, a few spyware, every time you close one, 10 others popups, even after you have closed the website's window,... They give misleading info to make you download their spyware, lie about everything,... THEY are the thief. If that kind of behavior was happening in real life. They would get closed very fast... Pop-ups should never have been made possible. Some sites use them as intended - to display more info or something youve asked for, but the *vast* majority just bug the hell out of the victim.
Also, according to that article, any HTML 2.0 browser is technicaly illegal since they cant interpret scripts and display popups. Shame that they also cant interpret scripts and log into a forum though.
