Any socket 7 board with an AGP slot is bad news for a 4X card. Mines is from Hercules, as reputable as they come. And it still didnt work. Still, Ive upraded to XP now so maybe itll work with the newer drivers.

toms hardware is not necessarily a reputable source..... sure its big but that does not mean they know what they are talking about.....

But you are making it out to be far worse than it is, via produce masses of chipsets, there are surprisingly few conflicts with other hardware given the wide variety that there is out there. Also, some of the are exacerbated by the actual mobo maker and the bios they use etc....

but back to the original subject, i have a radeon 8500 running in a agp 2x board no probs at all, problems come up with some boards which do not supply enough power to the cards.... give it a burl and see, no harm will come of it if it does not work.....

Andrewas is right... there are several voltage levels and socket configurations for 2.0 agp (not all are backward compatible with 1.0). If as animal stated your card is a Universal card... it will work with all... but you'll have to look up your card. Initially AGP was supposed to be a bidirectionaly compatible standard (1x card in 4x mobo ok, 4x card in 1x mobo ok)... but that appears to have gone by the wayside.

I have had unusual problems with my VIA chipset, but nothing that cant be fixed by hunting down drivers.

My mobo delivers plenty of power - custom voltage regulator coutesy of my somewhat-*nuts* father - but it still dosent work.

No harm will come to anything but your wallet. Make sure you buy your card from somewhere that will take a return.

That´s what the heartache is about, visiting Via´s website tells that they are drowning to problems. Fortunately, my bro just got himself a kyro 4500 which should be better compatible. We can always swap. It´s from an auction, and the price is not bad, so if it decides not to work I can always sell it on with good price.

I´ll keep those things in mind, however.

Kryos, Radeons and Geforces all have the same AGP requirements.

Well don´t ask me why...

Something interesting I just found out was that my mobo actually supports x4 too, and runs at 1.5V. Sorry about misnformation, hadn´t checked the manuals or bios for ages. Memory allowance was also set for 128mb, as I have 256mb in the machine.

So something positive from Via.
