And then keep you there. Whole system is designed to extract money from you as fast as possible without breaking laws.

But they do have uses, online purchasing etc. Just be careful with the damn thing. Miss payments and they complain loudly.

Try to get a credit card with no annual fees. It being your first credit card your not going to get the best interest rate so use it sparingly and pay it off quickly. Also be aware that credit card companies are often sold. The new company then raises your rates. This just happened to me. My interest rate was raised to a ridiculous amount. And I'd NEVER been late on a payment in the two years I've had it. They are scumbags. Remember that first and foremost. btw I'll be paying off that card next month and be cutting it in half and sending it along with a nasty letter to Merrick Bank. Do NOT deal with them. They are shit.

In the Netherlands, you can just link them to your regular bank accounts... Not sure if that's the same in the US.
But which creditcard you will get depends on the bank, actually. At the moment, I have a Mastercard, because my bank provided me with one when I ordered a "creditcard".

If your going to get a Vise card get the Capital one visa card I have 14 different credit cards my self of which 4 are Vise the rest are for stores like SEARS, Lowes, J.C.Pennies, ect... the only ones that I ever use are Sears and the Capital one Visa. they have the lowest interest and Capital one has the lowest by far the only reason I use SEARS is because I'm a tool nut and I pay it off each month so there is no interest.
But be really carefull how you use it because it can sneek up on you and kick your ass with payments. Never just pay the minimum that is 98% interest so pay at least 4 times the minimun at the very least each month and if you cant afford to pay that amount then don't use it. Now if you want to build up a good credit rating then buy something around $500.00 and pay it off in 120 days (4 MONTHS) THAT WAY YOU WILL ONLY BE CHARGED ABOUT $12.00 interest and if it takes you more than 4 months that intrest will add $12.00 per month after that and thats how they get you.
I just turned 50 years old this july and this is the way my father told me to use a credit card and it works. I spend $12,000.00 a year on credit cards and last year they cost me $232.00 total interest, which isn't that bad considering how much I buy, most of the interest was because my wife buys stuff on the internet every f*^+~#g other day and that will cost you more because of the securety charges. But chose CAPATOL ONE if you can get it they are very very honest and you won't have any trouble with them besides they have the lowest intrest rate! I hope this helps you.

You too! my visa got bought out by another bank and the interest went from 7.99% to 19.9%. I closed the account and I'm paying it off.
