Oh, and that was the same teacher that kept confusing 1st and 3rd person (She go.) and her tenses weren't that good either (Where did you went?). And her pronounciation... Eek!

Just keep in mind that not everyone who chooses to teach does it because they're good at it. And, pay being what it is, standards for teachers are sometimes a bit low. Let's face it, a lot of our would-be good teacher pool choose other higher paying professions or complete more school and teach college.
I realize Saz has already addressed your first comment somewhat in his thread asking people to stop and think before they post but I just want it said somewhere that people will notice that "those who can't *do* teach" is one of the lamest most offensive remarks ever made without thought to people who actually do teach.
Granted, you posing it here was a joke but it is not funny to put people who are willing to spend their time educating others in such a bad light.

Where would you be without those who taught you? No one ever thinks about that.

I've known teachers who were fantastic artist's, mechanics, landlords, and computer geniuses....these people chose teaching as their profession because eventaully it DOES pay well with great benefits upon retirement and here in the U.S. at least, it gives most teachers a three month vacation WITH PAY to do other things like travel, create, renovate, etc. etc.

I am an education major. Because I love children and I want to see something better come out of our school system and the children we will be depending on in our future.

The people who inspired me the most in my life have been teachers of all levels from the primary grades right through college.

I could do other things...I am educated in electronics, plumbing, carpentry, auto mechanics and a number of other fields...not so that I could ever work at jobs which that knowledge would employ, but because it makes me capable of DOING FOR MYSELF what I would otherwise have to pay someone else to do. Call it cheap if you want but one of the lessons my dad taught me that was worth its weight in gold is that there is nothing you can't learn if you take the time to.

The other comment you made that I wanted to address is "Let's face it, a lot of our would-be good teacher pool choose other higher paying professions or complete more school and teach college."

That should be the truth but the plain fact is it's not. I'm only spending my second year in college and granted, the best educators in college are well educated and dedicated but the worst ones are "well educated" and only in it for their bigger paychecks...they could give a crap who passes their courses because if the person has to take it again, it just guarantees them a job the next semester...as long as a majority of students "pass" (like with a C) their credibility is not judged and their worthlessness is not taken into consideration especially when they can blame the lower grades on "youth and their lack of responsibility"...some are even employeed to fulfill quotas for the balance of "race" and "handicapped" issues without judgement on the quality of their performance because they are needed there to fulfill a government quota which means they get continuous funding without question so long as their quotas are met.
Don't blame the teachers, blame the system that employees them. There are ways of weeding out the bad from the good but with the present state of teacher shortages in our country today the systems that employ them are forced to lower their standards in order to comply with governmental regulations.

This is a quote from an assignment I was given by my present English PROFESSOR in COLLEGE...

"Please read the following poems and selected one poem that you feel confident you can write a five-page analysis.
...
You May also selected poems from the following pages, 1145 through 1229."

A higher education and the status of a college professor doesn't mean squat. It only means that someone was able to afford to get themselves through the courses required to obtain the higher degree and that doesn't mean knowing the material.

*stepping off my soap box*

Quite a Moni. Well, I've said it elsewheres, but it bears repeating: I was joking. I've also pointed out elsewhere that I have student-taught before, both in undergrad and in law school, and I know it's not easy. Plus, I *love* to teach - if you can't tell by my ramblings herein. I was the kind of high school kid who would pay attention to teaching styles, hoping one day to be a teacher.

These days, I'd certainly take it as a second career, but I'd likely be too choosy to land a job. I wouldn't want to teach grade schoolers, as I think I'm not that good with them. I wouldn't want to teach high schoolers (except perhaps at private school) because the teenagers I know personally seem very hard to get through to and that is an age when learning is, for many, just not "cool" (though I have one 9th grade teacher friend who loves it and is still young enough to be "cool" in their eyes). I wouldn't want to teach law school because it's too much like working with "a**holes in training" (just joking - but law students are *super* critical of their profs.). So, I'd be left teaching some idealogy and justice or criminal or legal theory type classes at an undergrad university. Come to think of it, I'd absolutely love that job, and be willing to work hard enough to excel at it, but it is. . . as I said. . . a very rare find. I'm just too choosy.

Sorry to have irked all you wonderful patient loving intelligent great teachers out there.

I am not irked, I just thought it needed said while we were all on the subject.
The Those who can't *do* teach thing has bothered me for many many years...I only just decided to go into education myself last year, inspired by good people who are teachers and that I know only on a social level.

I am limiting myself in the field...to the very young kids, grades K-4. Once they get to be 10 and older, they get harder to handle, physically bigger than me and to be honest with you, I'm just plain frightened of kids between Jr High and High School ages.

Teaching in college would be another matter...at least by the time they get out of High School people who choose to continue their education, rather than being forced to like in the lesser grades, are usually not violent, even though a lot of them lack responsibility...it would be frustrating at times but at least it isn't as dangerous.

Ever since the 2nd grade, we´ve had english lessons. The class was divided to 2 groups - The other group has had a professional english teacher for all 6 years, while we`ve had 4, all of whom are idiots. Especially my current teacher.. At almost every lesson, we(the students) discover yet another of her spelling/grammar errors. "Are you agree", "Peoples(non-plural)" and "Helth" are but a few of the errors she makes. She once wrote "Makeing" on the blackboard. I raised my hand and said that its "Making" but she(and the rest of the class) disagreed. Since i was very confident that its "Making", i said that again. She opened a big book, read a bit of it and then said "Hmm, you are absolutely correct." and corrected it.
Another problem is pronounciation.. the way the teachers pronounce is really fudged up.

Yeah, I know i shouldn`t be too hard on them since they know more than the average estonian but they`re english teachers, for forks sake! They are supposed to be better in english than others!

Good grief - that's priceless coming from the man who doesn't capitalise the personal pronoun! Or who can't leave a space after a full stop or comma!

You'll be lecturing us(s) on maths next - what is the square root of 3 by the way?

Oh... I've only had one english teacher I've hated. I liked all the rest. My junior english teacher was the only one I couldn't stand that year. Completely random assignment, and being unable to explain MLA citation were some of her *good* points. How would you like a teacher that suddenly says "Let's do a news paper on immigration!" When you haven't read any books on immigration, or done anything with that subject at *all*. Or one who really looks books that are more for female readers. When the class is made of mostly guys. It was a good book I guess, but still... I got a b that year and that's the worse grade i've ever had in an english class...

Hey Moni all older students aren't bad you know!

I have to say that virtually all of my English teachers spoke excellent English. Even that American one who insisted on calling full stops 'periods'. Now why did us teenage brits find that word so funny?

Because you saw it written on the loo or WC wall? And what's is it about the letter z? You won't catch anyone calling the letter D "Debt."
