Yep, it's a brilliant idea. We did it at the Elysium as well, 3 days after the terrorist attack already actually because some of our members wanted to get some distraction from the disaster on the Internet by visiting their favourite message board, not be confronted with 30 pages long threads on the subject; it was simply too painful for them.
Of course, this forum was created for different reasons but the IW staff has my full support in this!

I hope it is eventually expanded into a forum for discussions of a more serious nature, since those sorts of things are apparently frowned upon by many of the general discussion members. This way they have absolutely no grounds for complaining about a thread that they don't approve of.

Hey Dio you are taking this the wrong way. It is not the serious discussion threads themselves that were doing the damage but the general atmosphere pervading the general discussion forum that was spilling into other threads. Remember Dio some people are more sensitive about this stuff than others. I personally am not but the reason i blew my top the other day was because 4 different people I have known since I started posting here have decided to not post here anymore. You know I have participated in some serious discussions as well, and I had no problem with that. But when tempers rose then it made the forum seem less welcoming to others. Hope that explains it a bit better.

I don't think that many people 'frown on such discussions'. Certainly there are some who like and some who dislike them, but I believe that the vast majority are neutral- taking part when they see something interesting and avoiding things when they don't. I think a large number of factors come into why someone might like the idea of this kind of discussion being separate. DragonMage's point is a good example.

I'm not sure whether I will like or dislike the new arrangement. I'm waiting to see how it works and how others like the setup. I tend to think it may encourage participation by a select few and not the more open exchange that makes such 'debates' lively and interesting, but I may be wrong. I hope that a wide variety of people, including new members and lurkers will participate. More people equals more input and broader horizons, as far as I'm concerned. So, like I said, I'll wait and see.

Hey, you packed yet?

Yes, AW, I am aware that many people share the view you have expressed here.

For myself I think it is a bit odd that people think such topics getting heated from time to time is somehow abnormal. Jeez, we are talking about life and death issues of the most grave nature. Of course they are going to get heated, as they should! This is not the some social conversation over dinner about our children's drawings at school -- we are talking about the most earth shaking issues of blood, death, and destruction, and future consquences of the most serious nature to life as we know it!

Okay, deep breath. Just had to get that off my chest

I am glad the new forum exists. Nuff said.

Um, of course not. That would go against my deeply ingrained sense of procrastination

No, just reminding. Things have gotten a bit heated in some of these longer threads today. I'll keep drumming my message!
