I was homeschooled for a year, and it was a blast! I found it much better, and I learned much easier than any other school year before or after. I could work at my own pace to get through things, and focus on certain things more if I had trouble with it. I see no downsides to it, since the people I had it through (they sent us books n' stuff) required that we had to have a music lesson of some sort, and some sort of organised physical activity, probably so we could socialize. I only actually did stuff for about 4 months too, so my school year was really short!

Indeed. I deep sleep once every other day now. It's good. Caffeine-induced long-stretches of consciousness are a wonderful thing to have.

When my grandfather worked for the union many moons ago, he had the morning coffee break, the lunch break, the afternoon coffee break, and even...The midafternoon in-between coffee breaks break...

It has to be hard to teach your own child without a lot of butting heads I would think. My kids are very strong willed. Stats do show it works however. Never knowing anyone who homeschooled their kids, I wonder how many hired tutors. The article states most are "white middle class christian families" and could probably hire tutors without a problem.
We homeschooled our 13 year old for a year due to the deplorable state of the middle school he was attending in Elmira NY (in our opinion). He did well at home but we are concerned for his social development, so now that we've moved to a rural town he will be going back to school... unless this school proves as incompetent as the last (and we doubt that would be possible). While religous freedom still plays a part in the majority of homeschooling decisions, more and more are like us... doing it because many public schools are an embarrasment that we don't really want to subject our children to.
