I heard about the inactive reserve being called up yesterday. This is NOT a draft. This is people being called on to serve out their contractual obligation. Each Service member who is Out Processed has it all explained to them haw they will have a number of years on inactive reserve status and may be called up at any time. You also get told about this issue when you are first inducted into the military. While Im sure there are inactive reservists who are PO'd about this...they signed on the dotted line and have to live up to their obligations. My take on this is that they need more bodies so they can rotate people out of Iraq..and untill they can recruit more people via the regular channels this is a stop gap measure. Myself, Rush Limbaugh and many others all said this would happen back when President Bush #1 and President Clinton made Deep cuts into the military...everyone (who was on the conservative side) knew the cuts were too deep. The US does this as regularly as clock work, after WW I we cut too depp, After WW II we cut too deep, After Korea and Vietnam We didn't cut too deep becauese we had the cold war, but at the end of the cold war...we cut too deep. Edit: Rokenn..I do not use Newsmax as a news source at all. I don't even have it bookmarked. I find them too ....well too off the wall. As for a draft..I will believe it when I see it. ![]() LOL Well even *I* Think NewMax has too often gone over the top. And they get editorial mixed up wit journalism too often. WND in my opinion tends to keep them seperate better....not perfectly but at least it is easy to tell Op-Ed from the news stories. |

You can chalk it whatever you want it to be, but don't call it a 'bashing' when there is no insult in it to begin with.
if its an unproven lie to call the character of someone's leadership into question, how can you call it anything other than an insult. do you compliment your mother by telling her she's getting old? Each Service member who is Out Processed has it all explained to them haw they will have a number of years on inactive reserve status and may be called up at any time. technically correct, and yet customarily very incorrect. yes, the innactive reserves can be called back. technically, though, even retired general yeager could probably called back if he was needed. in the past, however, innactive reserves meant you were done with the military life. this action is akin to the draft for many people because it in effect ruins the stability they had in their lives with a wrench that changes how the military has been treated in the past. it would be different if they had volunteered. men are not machines, and a work horse put to pasture shouldnt be brought back in for draft work. dont get me wrong, calling up the reserves is quite normal in times of war and conflict. however, calling up the innactive reserves is quite drastic.

I don't really see why they need more troops over there anyway, when they signed the power over to Iraqi leadership, Bush is still making 140,000 troops stay over there to enforce authority I think. Read an article someplace that Bush is making officers that have done their time in the army stay anyway, not fair if you ask me. |

Promethius, the laws regarding Officers and Enlisted are different. Officer level military persons may indeed be recalled for as long as their alive...legally....but not really likely. Enlisted personell may only be called back during the portion of their inactive reserve. the Usual maximum is 8 years..so if a person got out after 4 he could still be called back at any time within 4 years of his discharge. From what I heard today, they are looking for some specific job specialties too and not just going after every body. |

Actually Magik, as someone who got out just over a year ago, I can tell you the period of service for enlisted is ten years, I served 5 of those active duty, and nearly a year in the delayed entry program (signed up in august of '97 went to basic in july of '98) so I had 4 years left when I got out. So yes within the next 3 years they could recall me to military duty and I would accept it.
There is also another program called a stop loss that they enact to keep people from leaving the military in certain jobs, My own job was put into a modified stop-loss, we could leave 1 year after our contracts were up, but not before. {editted for clarity} [ 07-01-2004, 08:38 AM: Message edited by: Morgeruat ]

Ahh Morgie they changed the rules since I was in, from 8 to 10 years IR. That is new. Stop Loss has been around since world war II. And also is nothing new...during times of conflict any and all people will have their enlistments extended indefinately as needed. |

Bush has not proposed reinstating the draft.
There was a Congressman who wanted to reinstate the draft last year, but he wanted to do it because he thought too many minorities were serving. He wasn't interested in increasing the size of the army, he basically wanted to draft white kids until the number of minorities in the military went from 20% down to 10%. Reverse Affirmative Action. I wonder how he'd feel if half the minorities were discharged against their desires, and they set a future maximum quota for minorities in the military? ![]() This Congressman ignored the fact that the 20% of minorities he was so concerned about, like the 80% of whites, had all volunteered. He is an idiot, and the idea of bringing the draft back is idiotic. Again, Bush did not propose reinstating the draft. [ 07-06-2004, 04:31 PM: Message edited by: Ronn_Bman ]
