I don't really like the look of the flag. The two strips of blue at the bottom representing the Tigris and Euprhates is ok with the strip of yellow, the fertile land between. But i'm not sure about it. I think they should have come up with several designs then held some public votes on the matter. Give the Iraqis a taste of voting on something.

i agree they need a new flag, but it should definately have been a variation on the old flag...

also should have been a vote left to the iraqi people ALONG WITH the vote for the new government leaders. that would have worked to bring in a new flag with the new official government.

I think it needs green on it (going on the info that green is representative of Muslim -- which I did not know). Also, I think the look of it is fine, but the symbolism is questionable -- why do the Kurds get their own color stripe? What about one for the Sunnis and one for the Shia?

I do hope this doesn't count as necromancy, but its only a month or so old.

I just stumbled across this picture, which illustrates the problem so well:

(Apologies for the quality, i dropped it for the sake of size)

It's almost like someone had a checklist: "one more in our camp"

That's a helluva funny link, Shamrock. Juxtapose it with Israel's flag, and you can incite a whole new wave of ululating zealots.

"The biggest complaint was that it had been chosen by Iraq's US-appointed council without consulting the people."

I've got the impression that the Iraqi people don't like the US government making any descisions for them, let alone deciding for a new flag.

This seems like a really bad decision on behalf of the Council. Sorry for not paying attention, but who does this council consist of?

They did have several designs to choose from, Djinn, but the Council chose the design submitted the younger brother of one of their members. Surprise! Surprise!

I don't think they need a new flag. According to the article provided by Stratos, the majority of Iraqi's appear to feel the same way. Their previous flag pre-dates Saddam Hussein. He just added the phrase "God is Great". If they wanted to change anything, they could just have removed the part added by Saddam - but again, ONLY if the Iraqi people approved of the change.
