"If he puts his hand on a hot oven, he will be burnt and he will not do it again," said Moushira Khattab of Egypt. Ms. Khattab admitted to having lightly disciplined her own two children, now adults. But she added she now knows better.
"There are other means," she said. "Children are very smart, and even when they are as young as two or three months old, they will understand if you have a tough look, or change the tone of your voice, or turn away from them.

In th early 80's I lived in an apartment complex that had a large number of families from both Iran and Egypt. The fathers would watch as their children might swing a baseball bat at a friend or sibling. I also saw numerous occasions where a child would be running with kitchen knives, some with blades longer than 10 inches. The fathers wouldn't even comment on the behavior or fighting. They just waited until the wife noticed and handled the situation. Obviously I was in the presence of enlightened parenting. I appologize to this portion of the global community for my shortcomings as a parent and promise not to do it again. I'll just ask the government to incarcerate, torture or kill my children since the UN doesn't want to intefere with internal government of sovereign nations who practice such.
