currently my archery based party has both Jan and Nalia, too. i usually get Nalia to cast Spirit Armor on Jan. (it's necro, so Jan can't cast it) it makes his armor class much better, and gives him a save v. spells bonus. just remember to bring a scroll with you to Spellhold, because i'm assuming you'll drop Nalia for Imoen.

The party I've used (and am now running through TOB) was/is:

My character (Berserker dualled to Thief)
Minsc
Anomen
Nalia
Aerie
Imoen

One would say this is extrememly spell-heavy, as I have two major mages (Nalia and Imoen) and one minor (Aerie), and two clerics (Anomen and Aerie). However, I also have three tanks (myself, Anomen, and Minsc), and my chararacter dualled to thief takes care of all the thieving functions, so I have no need to use Nalia or Imoen for that; I use them strictly as mages.

With this combination at high levels, I was able to blow through both the Twisted Rune and Kangaxx in one playthrough, no reloads...depends on how you use it, but it's been the most effective one all the way around for me.

Cheers,
-Sazerac

Twisted Rune? Twisted Rune? hmmmmmmmm......nope, it just doesn't mean anything to me. I've probably done it already, I just don't remember the name. What exactly is the Twisted Rune?

The Twisted Rune is a little quest that involves probably the toughest fight in the game. Read below for spoilers.

Find a Rogue Stone. Bring that to the house in the Bridge District where you found Kangaxx's Torso (or was it arms/legs?). Now, there should be a house next to it, with a locked door. This door can only be opened if you have a Rogue Stone. Go inside, and enjoy...

OK! So how were we supposed to know that? I assume there was a hint somewhere!

it would be only by chance or by collective forum knowledge that you would find it. I happened to find it while doing the Tirdir living burial quest when Yoshimo detected a trap, and we went inside. If you download the Baldurdash patch that restores the Rune quest, then there is a big hint wrapped around a Rogue Stone in the Guarded Compound in the Temple District. (also a nice fight... but my dwarven barbarian had no problems... alone... at 12th level... twisted rune is next... but he's 24th level now... so it should be even easier...
