I'll have to go with the Paladin for being the most effective warrior. Armour of faith combined with hardiness vastly reduces physical damage, and other spells such as neg. plane protection and defensive harmony provide decent protective bonuses. The advanced specialisation in BG2 doesn't mean squat, since spending a further 3 slots on a weapon only provides an aditional +1 to hit, +1 to damage and -1 to speed factor which is pretty lame. These extra slots should provide an additional +3 damage and an extra attack per round, so this has really taken away much of the effectiveness of the fighter. Paladins turning undead rules since you can eventually blow liches into oblivion *bang* instant 22000 XP. They also get +2 to all saving throws.

Looking at the pro's for a fighter though, they level up faster, achieve a higher level (40 instead of 34) so have more hitpoints and more HLA's, have slightly better weapon skill, and can play any alignment. Failure to stick to the lawful good path for a paladin, and you lose almost all your bonuses - turn undead, priest spells, kit bonuses are all lost. If the weapon specialisation tables were the same as in IWD and BG1, then I'd prefer the fighter.

I say paly Just charge and undead hutnter into the vamps and watch him clean house. Or have him slam into a mage and see the mages shields drop then he dies.

I am still polishing it up, but it is almost ready.

Here is a link that chronicles most of the major events that my solo Cavalier went through in SoA and ToB. Heh... it is just my personal opinion, but I feel Paladins have a better deal in that they can handle a greater variety of situations. More damage from the Fighter means squat if they get swarmed by Vampires, but to a Paladin of sufficiently high level, it is an Xp Godsend( pardon the pun).

In ToB, Paladins get a far better selection of HLAs as well. Can a Fighter summon a Deva?

A berserker figher is no. 1. +2 to AC and stuff when enraged + immune to spells. That's pretty cool.

Speaking of lichs. They are nothing. They are crap. There is a special weapon which kills them in one blow so this turning undead isn't that great.

Unless, of course, the lich casts Protection from Magic Weapons. he gets 4 rounds to cast Time stop, then all sorts of nasty spells that will essentially kill you. Fighters have only one strategy: run up and hit/shoot it in the head. Paladins are much more versatile. My cavalier has actually turned a lich during his own time stop!

The save vs death is too much for the lichs. Haste a berserker and the little lichy-lichy want be able to cast a single spell. In my last SoA game only 2 lichs had the time to cast a single spell. The others were killed in 1 smack. Thanks to a speciale weapon.

unfortunately, unless they happen to rise out of the ground and you can smack them first, they cast 5 or 6 spells instantly, then fire off a nasty spell trigger, and time stop. not much you can do. personally, i use nasty tricks or the Daystar to deal with them.

But then again, a Protection from Undead scroll nullifies the entire lich/vampire argument for both sides.
