When you try to open the 'magic' doors by yourself, you get the blurb "Only a powerful mind or godly strength can force this door open." That's what the Slayer transition halps with--literally, godly strength. In my current game, I blasted through chapters 4 and 5 without sleeping, skipping the Mind Flayer dungeon entirely. When I come back to it, I'm gonna have the Crom Faeyr, and I'll see if that will open the doors as well.
