Zaleukos, nice balanced post. I was wondering if you think...
1) I should hold off until another patch comes along, especially for that dreaded memory leak and... 2) From your experience do you think my hardware is good enough to run the game: Athlon 64 3200+ cpu, 2 gigs of Crucial Ballistix PC 3200 RAM, and a X800 GTO 256 MB video card? |

Yes you'll be able to play with your system.
I was able to make the game start, but I wasn't impressed, with it and uninstalled it.

1) As much as I love the Gothic series I recommend waiting for the US release as I suspect the next patch will be ready by then. That is unless you want to spend extra time managing saves or is a Gothic fanatic. For me the current state of the game is playable but not perfect, but there are people with many more problems (I didnt have too many crashes pre-patch either). 2) I think it should run reasonably well. I got a similar setup save that I have a Gefore 6800GS gfx card (I dont know much about graphics cards and dont know how yours compare to mine). I think I read that some people have problems with Radeon cards. Framerate is fine on medium settings and 1024x768 resolution, as long as I turn off postprocessing (HDR and bloom) and lower shadows. The reason I actually run it at lower settings than that is the ridiculous loading time, and the fact that I as an old school gamer isnt that bothered by worse graphics. And there is always a huge lag when torches are equipped as it seems like new textures are loaded into memory. I'm checking out www.rpgwatch.com and the official forums at http://forum.jowood.com/forumdisplay.php?f=254 for information. The official forums arent that bad at the moment (at least not compared to the Bethesda forums), but might get worse after the US release generates more English-speaking players:p |

What is it with the newer Radeon cards and the NWN games? The X800 series of cards have issues loading NWN1 and they still haven't corrected it. My much older and less than stellar ATI 9200 on my old P3 gaiming rig with 512 PC133 RAM did better.
By the way, have you utilized the new 1.09 patch and what do you think? [ 11-08-2006, 10:12 PM: Message edited by: Albromor ] |

Gothic is usually for those types of people who didn't grow up with a console and know how to play proper games with a decent learning curve.

Alb: I havent tried nor even downloaded 1.09. It was released after I had finished the game, and I dont intend to replay it until the next major patch is released. It'll be a better experience if I dont have all the quests in fresh memory
![]() Btw, I lowered the graphics settings temporarily while liberating cities, as fighting 50 orcs at a time caused pretty serious stuttering on medium. |

i like the game, but it crashes *alot* when even when i try to adjust the graphic quality it closes out the game to restart it, but then it never manages to reopen the game; but my CPU is stuck at 100% usage on that file so i have to cancel it from the queue.
If the game didnt studder so much i think it would be a lot easier combat wise too. I have a nvidia 7800 with an AMD 3 ghz processor so i dont think its that - especially since i can run oblivion almost studder free. |

After alot of tweaking, waiting for patches, now 1.09, I can play the game again. It is still a bit unwieldy and laggs often but some of the more real hardbugs are gone. It still CTD's but not as often. I am on a Athlom AM2 400 + with a GeForce 7800 GT card and has 2 gigs of really quick RAM so my puter isn't the bottle neck, Gothic 3 is just badly optimized and the thing with no loadtimes takes it tolls. To get it to somewhat playable speed, I have disable more or less all shadows and dynamic lightings, however I increased the buffers to max and also have the sight set to maximum as well, makes archery a bit more useful as well.
The game is like a really mixed compot of glorious moments of sheer adventures luck, and frustrating unsolvable quests and the chopices you make doens't always just have an impact on how to play it is also if you can solve the major quest as well. If you can't do or solve all quests in a city, you might not get the necesary influence to do the "peaceful" way but have to go almighty brute, and that means that you will be running and potioning alot! Sometimes it is really understandable what and how to do so you can focus and concentrate on one quest, sometimes however you will see that you solved quests you didn't have in your log book so.. it is all up to how you like things to play out. Never the less, once the technical bugs are straightened out and if you can get a decent speed on the graphics the game is enjoyable. Unfortunately it is IMO one of those games one will allways think "what if it just had been smoother and better optimized". Gothic 3 could have been so much more, as it is now it is another run around and collect flowers game that lets you do alot of things while your having a fun adventure.

The quest log is crappy to the point of bugginess. It only records part of the conversation with the quest giver, often omitting vital directions. I hope PB fix that.
Have you guys tried to disable postprocessing (or is that what you mean by no dynamic lighting)? It might help performance a bit. And I think that the only town leaders that have essential main quest item are the ones in Trelis and Mora Sul. The reputation in Trelis is easy enough to increase, Mora Sul is tighter and impossible if you give some items to the "wrong" persons. I just ran into the Mora Sul boss' house and killed him and his annoying mage friend with a halberd... |
