I made the same mistake in the beginning.

You don't put men in boats, the boats connect countries with harbours to eachother. If you have ships in all waters from, let's say Wessex to Morocco, you can drop armies in Morocco from EVERY province between those two IF they have a harbour. That way you don't have to travel all the way over land, advancing only one province a year. So you see, if you control the waterways, you can drop armies ANYWHERE on the map you like.

Of course your enemies aren't completely stupid, they build warships too, and try to build up supplyroutes of their own. It's important to take out ANY enemy incursions in your waters, otherwise your supplyroute is interrupted, and therefore blocked, and your troops will have to travel over land again. So sink the landlubbers.

Oh well. I cant wait for Rome Total War coming out 3rd Quarter of the Year.
I've conquered the whole map twice now, one time with the English, and the other with the Turks. I love that music they play when the Turks charge in.

The grey units are rebels aligned with no faction. I can't remember whether or not you can invade them if they have a port or not. Anyway if you love this game then you'll love the upcoming

I'm playing it too atm, and i couldn't send an emissary to Ireland, i think because they don't have a harbour. Bit weird, since i control the waters between England and Ireland, so i should be able to cross. I send two armies instead, peaceful solutions aren't always the best.

I bribed as much "rebel states" as possible right from the beginning. The Scots, Welsh, that little province next to Aragon, Sweden, Norway, and last but not least Lithuania. So now i have footholds in North, East AND southern Europe. Forget the west, i AM the west.

Particularly Lithuania is strategically very important. I can block the Mongol invasion there, which will occur somewhere between 1230 and 1250 if i'm not mistaken. Every year there's a lot of mercenaries for hire in Lithuania, which will be desperately needed, since the Mongols bring an army of 15000/20000 men.

I couldnt send armies either, but then the french invaded it, built a port and genorosly *gave* it to me . The mongol invasion is already been done and I think the Germans crushed them. Ive secured the west coast, and now im thinking of taking over northern Africa and then to the east! By the way, what else can the Bishops/Cardinals do except reduce the chane of an Inquisitor succeeding? The manual states that they can convert people to catholic(or islamic/orthodoxic, depending on religion) belief, but what does this actually do?

They are important in regions where there are other beliefs than catholic. If you send priests to conquered regions in the middle east and eastern europe, there's less chance of an uprising. I'm not saying that it will never happen at all if there's a priest in that region, but it reduces the possibility. Unfortunately priests are an easy target for assassins. Mine get killed all the time. It sorts much more effect if you send a grand inquisitor, but you can't train those early in the game. A priest tries to convert the local people, an inquisitor executes them. That's another way of letting them know who's boss.

If you need to indoctrinate your people with your own religon because of uprisings or whatever upgrade priests to cardinals or inqusitors for a faster change in attitude.
