However, the monthly fee also discourages people from downloading the game, as people that download a game aren't likely to want to pay that fee.

The monthly fee is there in either case, if a person is going to balk at a subscription only game they're definitely not going to shell out 50 bucks and THEN decide they don't want to pay a subscription.

Almost all upcoming MMORPG's are pay-to-play now. I hate it but I either refuse and get left behind, or jump on the damned bandwagon. Plus, if it excludes hating f**kers and people who talk "ju$t jike d1s d00d" then I'm almost happy to pay it (almost hehe..).

I will say I've been in beta all last week and it is probably one of the best games I've ever played for enjoyment purposes and online experience. The whole city, It's just mental - and in a good way, lol.

If anyone is interested I'll post some firsthand screens but it does not yet look as if any share my need to live out those superheroe fantasies of mine, oh well . Anyways, I'm off to return to saving the innocent!

Pay for play is OK... MMORPG's that have centralized integration (as opposed to games like Quake where people run their own servers with small numbers of users) are very expensive to run day to day (as opposed to stand alone games that don't have maintainance costs for the game company). I just wish those companies would have enough faith in their products to let people get involved by downloading the app for free (or maybe a few bucks to maintain the download server), and paying to subscribe to the server. It would probably keep most of the goofballs away because of the subscription rate, but it would show that the producer has enough faith in the product to resist the huge front loading they're currently doing by charging $50 bucks for a box that's worthless without the subscription.
