I started playing but had a strange problem, everytime I played after 20-30 mins the game screen would just start filling in black untill completely black.
I owned 4 or 5 other games I hadn't played at the same time (EB had one of those sales you just can't pass up) so it went on the back burner.

We got hold of a cheap copy in a sale a while back. Played it for a while and could see it had some good features. However our graphics card wasn't really up to the task, maybe one day when we've upgraded we'll try again.

I think your screen filling in black was NIGHT FALLING. Since you don't have torches or anything at the beginning I just raised the brightness level a lot. I've just bought Arcanum and started playing yesterday, first attempt with a half-elf relying on charisma and today with a dwarf relying on tech. There is already a big difference between the 2 games--I think this is a game you can play much differently with different characters. But yeah, it's complicated!

Not a bad game but some users complained about graphic card incompatiblity issues. I am not sure if they have addressed the issue with the latest patch. Anyway, I finished the game quite a while ago. IMO, it is quite a nice game.

I've been playing it for a little while now but have noticed that even though the manual says you can play as any race and it won't really effect game play I've noticed that (at least in my copy) almost all the really good cool armor is for little people!!! And of course I'm not playing as a little person!!!
But aside from the little glitches, the difficult character creations/up raising and all the fed-Xing quests... Its not really that bad of a game.

You just have to know where to look...it was PC Gamer and Gamespy's RPG of the year a couple of years back.

I have been known to dabble in it, but I got jolted away from it when my lvl 50 warrior mage got to a point where he couldn't get all the blessings, cuz the game would boot me out.

Ditto! I love Arcanum, because they're really plentyfull of choices and the character generation is really good, albeit complicated. It took me a bit to get into it, but it was worth it.

Arcanum's great, except that by the end of your game, your gun weilding lunatic runs out bullets and has to fight the final boss w/ a bloody dagger. Also, tech is horribley weak compared to magick, and you need to haul arouund useless crap that takes up space ( broken revolver anyone?)
