Nope, they're both of exactly the same value, in enchantment worth, as well as in gold (both trapped souls can be sold for 80.000).

My guess is that they realised that there was no way to have enchant be a viable skill while still limiting people's ability to make scads of overpowered equipment. In Morrowind, enchanting an item required either paying a huge amount for someone to do it for you even when you had your own soul gem, or boosting your intelligence to ridiculous levels so that your enchant attempt wouldn't inevitably fail.
The value of the enchanting skill in morrowind wasn't for making your own items, it was the fact that high enchantment skill lowered the cost of using an enchanted item. In effect it made your enchanted weapons and items last longer.

OK, now after reading this I am confused...or is it alheimers?

What is the difference between a soul gem and a captured soul? I read someplace that you can use soul gems to enchant pieces of armor etc. How do you do that?

A soul gem is the vessel that can hold a soul.

A captured soul is the soul of a creature which inhabits the soul gem - ie one that is trapped inside.

A soul can be trapped by killing a creature with the spell 'Soul Trap' active and you must have a soul gem of the correct size available.

I don't actually know how to enchant pieces of armour etc (no doubt someone more knowledgeable will explain), but clicking on a soul gem with a captured soul inside will allow you to recharge previously enchanted weapons.

Without mods, the only way to enchant items is through the mages' guild and even then, only after you've carried out a lengthy list of menial errands to earn entry into the arcane university. Another example of less freedom.

You can also enchant items with Sigil Stones, but you're restricted to one effect only.

Yes the only way to Enchant a weapon or artical That is worn is with the Alter of
Enchanting, so eighter Down load a MOD that has this Item included in the mod or
Become a Mage and join the Mage guild.

NOTE: The most important thing to keep track of when creating a new magical weapon is the number of uses that your enchantment will get before you need to use a soul gem to recharge the item. The more powerful the enchantment the fewer uses you get before you will need to recharge it and the more it will cost you to enchant the item. The size of the soul Gem that you use to create the weapon will also Dictate the charge that will be needed each time you recharge that weapon, the Soul Gem Enchantment points are as follows:

Petty soul gem = charge 150
lesser soul gem = charge 300
Common soul gem = charge 800
Greater soul gem = charge 1,200
Grand soul gem = charge 1,600

If you use to many enchantment on one item you may end up with a weapon that does alot of damage with one hit, but you only get 10 hits before all the enchantments are used and you need to recharge again and that can be very expensive.

One other Important Item is that worn Items never need to be recharged they stay as a constant effect as long as your wearing the item but a worn Item can only have one enchantment on them where as a weapon can have a few.
Also its not a good Idea to enchant every Item you wear with the same effect it's alot better to have a different type protection or effect on each item in order to get a bonus for each different situation you may come up against. What good is it to have 15% Cold protection on each of 5 items your wearing when you run into a Flame Atronach? That just spells a hot death and you with cold feet.
