It's not an RPG: No choices, no consequences, at most 2 dialog choices (discounting the almost ever present 'goodbye') (no the wiki subjects are NOT dialog choices) and what skills you've chosen has no consequence in game other than HOW you fight monsters and/or gain money. Other than that, the, though lineair, quests have improved and have nice twists and storylines.

That said, this game is extremely good fun anyway, and manages to hold it's own in even my top 10 of games ever. (yes competing with the likes of Daggerfall) Oblivion's athmosphere is of a type not seen since 10 years, and it's immersion factor is pretty high.

Radiant AI doesn't score the points like the developers LIED they would, it's still a much better system than MW and manages to uphold the illusion that something IS happening in the town.

Combat has improved from MW in that it's now more active, prepare to think about your block/attack timing. That said, it isn't as next-gen as people would have you believe(partly because of mediocre AI), but it's still fun. Magic has reached it's potential, in that all spells are useful now. If this would have been done in MW, it would have been a great magic game. Finally, stealth has been improved, not because going in stealth has changed, but because of the dynamics of the system. It's still "have I been seen or not", but it depends on light and sounds and what way your opponent is facing. Prepare to watch your enemy until he turns his back.

The graphics are good, even on your low end pc that runs it on 640x480 (but don't use anything lower than a GF 6600). But that doesn't matter to make it a great game. Likewise, the soundeffects are great, the music has improved(battlemusic WILL start to irritate) and you'll hear your footsteps be dependant on surface and boots.

All in all, this game receives a big fat 8 from me, and I've not even thought about giving that nice a grade to a game from the last four years. It's a good fun game with long hours and an immersive athmosphere, but it could have been SO much more. If only Bethesda would have made some real RPG choices...

I'd say that's a fair review and would have to agree with most of what you say. It is a goegrous game though, I could wander for hours doing nothing but admiring.

Actually mobs do have an "alerted" state where they think they saw something and may even move to investigate, and say something like "Propably rats" when they give up. They do not search as long and systematically (hardly at all) for you like in Thief games. Another thing is that once you are found you can't really run and hide again unless you cast invisibility on yourself.

Oh, and Oblivion does not have Thief style light meter (but true sneakers don't needs such hand holding anyway )

As dialogue for the choises, the only game I can think of that often had more than just two meaningful things to say was Planescape: Torment. Baldurs Gates just usually had one of those choises reworded and presented as third dialogue choise for the sake of illusion.

ps. Of course true RPG enthuastics claim there are no such things as CRPGs at all. Period.
This is true, a game can only do so much and can't compare to the freestyling human mind of say, a DM. Still, multiple choices that let you veer a little are nice in games.

What he said. Examples of (C)RPG's are PS:T, Fallout and KOTORII(though this one is sadly very lineair). When I say RPG in this context, I meant CRPG ofcourse, which will always be limited, but it's still very possible to add in multiple choices/consequences, as PS:T demonstrates.

Good points, all...though to be honest, I play CRPGs so that I can enjoy pretty things, and wander around, making my character super awesome. I play RPGs to spend time with my buddies, and to figure out how to do things with the various limitations intrinsically laid upon my character, while maintaining the character's character.

I don't think the developers lied in anyway. I think Radiant AI was greatly overhyped by the fanbase, and to a small extent the actual devs. But Radiant AI is exactly the way I expected it to be. The devs never made any guarantee's or promises, and it does its job extremely well.

After finnishing the main plot, and most of the mages guild quests I will say the game is good. I would rate it about a 7/10 overall, as there are a few quirks here and there. Also with every new TES game Bethsoft releases it seems to they are cutting down the skills, items and spell selection while bumping up the graphics. To me it feels bland when a series tosses away core content in lue of graphics.

Also I like the voice acting however there are glaring problems with many characters switching from one actors voice to another. This really bugs me to no end as to hear one voice then the next paragraph is spoken in some other actors voice detracts from the experiance. Another porblem with the voices is that there are only like 3-4 male and 3 or so female.

Action RPGs are not my first love so perhaps if you are an action RPG fanatic it would score higher. I personaly like set encounters like how Baldurs Gate I/II do it so you can actaully meet an enemy at low level that would kick your ass with almost no chance of winning wihtout cheese. Here in this game at level one you can actually finnish the whole game without ever pulling out a weapon or casting a single spell until the very end. And at that point the big bad dude will be level one as you are so killing him is anti-climatic...

Again its a good game but I see many flaws with the core system. It is however worth the money for the game even with the flaws. But be careful about the system specs as this game will put even a high end rig to a crawl.

Of course this is my own opinion after playing the game.

The great thing about morrowind, is that there are so many things to do other than hte main quest. You could, say, go on a leveling spree. Then, when you start hte main quest, it's very challenging, and not anti-climatic. Or maybe you could raise one skill to Master. Say, Mercentile. Then invest in a store. Or you could roleplay.

Need I say more?

No probs! Hope you get yourself up and running soon so you can get back to your Ironworks-addiction Congrats on the 10.000!
Can't wait till summer mate. Some free time!! Haven't had any since September (excluding Christmas).

Sever: I'm not a big fan of first person games in general. I think Doom III was the only game I finished which was first person. If I play them for too long I tend to get headaches. I don't mind the first person view you have in KOTOR though, where you have a chase camera.

But this game looks like it's worth trying out. I'll be sure to get it when summer comes.
