With soul trap, the duration of the spell is real important... more than once I've missed out on a soul because the spell expired a fraction of a second before the critter died.
I do like the soul drinker dagger you get for doing some not nice things [or lieing about having done them] for the head mage in Balmora: I rarely use the spell at all, just grab the dagger when I see something I want to trap, whack it a couple of times, then switch to a better weapon [I configured the controls to switch weapons via the mouse wheel: very speedy way to swap.] IMO, Sunder is one of the very best weapons in the game: I'm not sure just how the +30 attack on it works, but it rocks, as well it should: the hammer of the gods, after all... some interesting things about soultrap...
if you use the version you can buy at the mage guild, the touch version, when you use the spell on a summoned creature, like a saint, it does not register as a hostile action, so the saint will just stand there....but a ranged soul trap will definately be noticed as an attack... soul trapping saints can be an iffy proposition...they have the ability to cast dispell on themselves so you need a powerful weapon to bash them quickly and effectively. a fun thing to try soul trapping golden saints... hehhehehheh!!! try levitating using a constant effect levitate item, really really high, and equip a constant effect slowfall item...summon a saint, using a device, make sure it will stick around a while... now the poor saint will immediately start falling, giving you a "you dirty %$#@#*&!!!" look as it freefalls... unequipp the constant effect levitate item, and you will slowfall tword the ground...you'll see the golden saint on the ground, and after it climbs out of the hole its made on the landscape, it will just stand there, so you can soul trap it, and kill it...and because it took a huge fall, it will be much much weaker and hurt, making it very easy to kill...a very considerable benefit at lower levels... ![]()
