Brother Bernhard heard himself being accused as he rounded the corner trying to find the inquisitor. Such boldness in a servant. As his eyes blazed and he glared at the man's back he wished strongly he were back in his old country where he could have the man fired (from a catapult) for such words. Puffing up his chest in an aristocratic manner, he cleared his throat, hoping the Inquisitor would dismiss the cook to speak with a fellow man of the cloth, he was after all, far more important than the fool trying to trash his reputation.

"Noone is to leave the abbey until the murder is solved" the guard explained. Francisco started speaking with staggering speed "But I must go to town to get new razors they are just in from Barcelona and I can not work without the finely crafted blades and the Inquisitor will be most unhappy because I am his barber and I do not want him to.... Murder? What murder? Where? They don't thing it's me do they? Dios mio..." Francisco turned and started pacing nervously to his room. Unfortunately, his route took him right next to the murder scene and the number of people gathered around it. He heard that one of the clergy has been accused. "What happened here?" his voice betrayed his fear.

Inquisitor de Labarita looked at the german-born brother and the cook. Whatever he thought he hid it and motioned Bernhard to enter the late abbot's study. After Bernhard entered ahead of him the Inquisitor turned back to Lamort.
"I shall send for you later." He closed the door of the study behind himself. "You wanted to talk to me Brother Bernhard?" |

Bernhard bowed low to the inquisitor. After he indicated that Brother Bernhard should rise he did so, "May I have permission to speak to you frankly Inquisitor?" When he was granted the permission he spoke in a low voice, "I know suspicion has been raised against me due to the fact that I am the last to have spoken to the late abbot before he was found this morning. I would like to state that on that count my soul is clean before you and God. He was cautioning me about appearances, you see I have been teaching musical instrument lessons to several of the serving girls, as music is another way we may raise our hearts in praise of our lord. The instrument I have been teaching is this." Brother Bernhard withdrew a slide whistle from a pocket in his robes. "The late father was cautioning me against further lessons because it could raise questions about my piety and the strength of my oaths, I was angry at first, but came to accept the wisdom of his decision after we parted and I was meditating in my quarters. All I know about the murder is that the Abbot was a close friend and a kindly mentor of mine and I would rather have seen myself dead in the square this morning than hear of his murder." Bernhard then crosses himself. "In my old country we had a saying, a man who first points the finger often has the most to hide. I don't know who killed the abbot, and I won't be pointing fingers as I would not want innocent blood on my hands if I am wrong."

"Don Inquisitor de Labarita!" he exclaimed, as the man unexpectedly returned to him with more questions. "It is of course no surprise people misunderstand eachother. We are each of us gravely disturbed and upset by these happenings, and not all of us have yet had the oppertunity to find some comfort and calmth in the gardens." He gestured towards one of the ochards in blossom. "But let me tell you there is nothing I hide. I am but a simple man and this is my life. I would not dream to point a finger myself, all I said was that this monk was the last to see him, don inquisitor, and might know something more of the abbot's plans and doings before he died. They would no doubt be be valuable clues to the investigation, did he tell you no such things? "I tell you this, I would not see any man burn who is not guilty, and point none of these 'fingers' on mere suspicion without argument, don inquisitor. OOC: Bernhard may just bern easy. I vote him, too. |

Two of the guards, who had accompanied the Inquisitor entered Brother Bernhard's room.
"Inquisitor de Labarita wishes to see you." The guards took him through the winding corridors and finally they reached the Inquisitor's room. As Bernhard stepped inside the room he saw that there were half a dozen more guards in there along with the Inquisitor. "Don Inquisitor, I haven't..." - Bernhard started, but was silenced by a hand gesture of the Inquisitor. "Even when I found out that you could not restrain yourself with the serving wenches, you looked suspicious to me. Today I heard several people mentioning you also." He motioned his guards. "Put him to the test." Unfortunately the truth was never found out, as Brother Bernhard did not survive the test... OOC: Brother Bernhard/Morgeruat was an innocent villager. |

There has been another one, Don Inquisitor. - one of his guards reported to him.
"Who?" The guard told the Inquisitor. Take me to the scene. No one was at the scene yet, outside the walls of the abbey. All evidence showed that the victim had been pushed off the abbey walls, and died instantly when reaching the base of the walls. "Dispose of the corpse. I don't want the people of the abbey to know about this. I shall use the information during my interrogations, when I see fit." The guard nodded his understanding, and he and his companions got to work. The Inquisitor sent out word that he wanted to see everyone, one by one, in his quarters. He gave no reason. OOC: First wolf victim was Santiago de Valencia the Shrinekeeper. It is now dayphase. Phase ends on wednesday night my time. Place votes by then, and go and get interrogated again by the Inquisitor, if you want to go. |

Lamort prepared the normal breakfasts and delivered them to each person, upon reaching Santiago's room he could not find him. After searching the abbey he decided to ask the Inquisitor if he was aware of Santiago's absense.

The gardener suppressed a yawn. "Last night, Don Inquisitor? I did not sleep well, you see. The thought of the abbot's death kept playing through my mind, it is such a terrible thing. Who would do a thing like that? I truely hope that your investigations have been a success. "As I say, I did not sleep well. So what do I do? I take a walk in the gardens to contemplate what this means for the abbey. I found I was not alone either, seeking some peace there. The shrinekeeper was strolling through the ochard by the walls, but it is not with him I spoke. I shared words of little meaning with a barber and one of the kitchen boys instead, which was a great comfort to a simple man like me, don inquisitor. "When the moon rose higher, I knew it was time to give rest another chance, so I proposed we go back to our chambers. Master Francisco tells me he wants to have a word with a monk and that he will be in later, and started towards the walls himself. The boy left for his place near the kitchens and myself, I found sleep after a time of tossing and turning." He nodded, and rose to leave, relieved that this session with the inquisitor was over. |
