I don't know how your game works, but that's how mine works...

A charmed monster is only literally under your control. Technically, it is not because it wasn't when you found it. I should have explained in more detail for those of you who need the explanation. The monster has to enter the game in your control. If the monster is charmed, confused, or otherwise incapacitated or manipulated, it will not work (unless of course you get the killing blow.) I believe what you were saying about the mind control device you got from the illithid layer to be a bug. The monster was not summoned and is only charmed. You *should* HAVE to get the killing blow.
