When I hovered my mouse over Vi during that fight, I noticed that she registered as level 17, even though she had reached level 24 in my party! How inconvenient... though probably helpful for someone who just had her with the party briefly and brought a level 10 Vi to Ascend.

I think that the end fight would've been better if the Savant summoned more powerful henchmen that would actually protect the Savant, and maybe cast Heal All on occasion. The henchmen he summons are puny and easily ignored. The problem is that a party cannot lose if they are periodically being healed and an opponent is not.

On a slightly different note, there doesn't seem to be many times when one monster will protect another. I can only think of one or two times in all my games that it actually occured. Considering that the Savant is immeasurably difficult to kill with magic, I would expect that had his cronies often blocked physical attacks made on him, he would have been much more formidable.

I have no idea why his physical resistance wasn't made as powerful as is magical resistance, any Bozo with a sharp stick could bring him down. A lvl 25+ Mage with 100+ powercast would have a nigh impossible time trying to do the same thing.

Anybody actually kill him without physical attacks or elementals?

In my two magic-only parties, this was one of the three fights i had to use elementals. And in expert, even elementals with haste + superman + enchanted blade + bless (+ armormelt on DS) only _very_ rarely hit him. But my offensive spells did no damage at all. So the fight lasted about 45 minutes.

Question about Vi......

I noticed that Myles actaully kept his Thieves Daggers when I dismissed him because they were cursed.

If I equipped Vi with the following cursed items..
Divine Mail Coif
Divine Mail Gown (U)
Divine Mail Gown (L)
Faust Halberd

Would she use the halberd in battle and do some decent damage?

Faust is very slow, so you don't get as many swings as you would with (eg) a Dread spear. But Faust does mash stuff up pretty good. Divinemail isn't the only thing you can get to regen HP, and there's also the training aspect--let her lose a few HP and then heal herself... The problem with so much Divinemail is you can run into the wrap-around effect and end up unprotected against Divine magic.

I was only considering it for the end game battle where according to what I've read in this topic Vi will leave the group. ( Thus automatically giving back all her equipment. ) So if Vi is going to use a polearm in the final battle it's either the Faust halberd or the even slower Raven's Bill.

Just out of curiousity what is the wrap-around effect? Is there a number I should watch out for? 255 Maybe?

Yes..... you have the right number but you may not see it. In my experience, only Divinity is affected although I have heard speed can be, too.

Speed wraparound??? wow! You'd have to have a lot of speeder artifacts on, Haste, and Super at full power...i didn't know the engine even calculated Attributes beyond 120.
Divine Magic is not the only Realm that can wrap-around (Divinity is not the same thing--it's a School, and you can't get items to protect against Schools, only Realms)
Any Realm can wrap-around if you can get over 255 in protective devices and spells. You can only see the first 100, but your protection can exceed that. Divine is the Realm that's easiest to wrap-around, because there are many artifacts which have Divine protection. Fire and Water are next easiest; if you have a Light Shield and a bunch of Ebony Armor and maybe a Brimstone Ring and cast Magic Screen and Element Shield at full power.

Last time I remembered, the summoned guards did try to protect the Dark Savant, one of them probably needs to be in position to do so, though (like standing behind him). If I'm not mistaken, the Dark Savant or somebody did periodicly heal all. It's a risky strategy, because if the DS goes down, the troops all automatically go down. He would have been better off calling in more troops.

I actually notice protecting happens alot. In particular, I've seen the Rogue Leader, other Higardi bad guys, Al-sedexus, Rapax Concubines (with vets or other grunts), T'rang (with dung beetle pets), Umpani, Siges (with Trynnie ghosts, maybe juggernauts too), and the giant Rattkins all get the message 'blah2 protects/fails to protect blah1'.

I meant Divinity protection. There is a mail (robe?) you can get later that almost always does the wrap-around bug if you cast higher soul shield. I've never had the speed bug but it comes from wearing certain artifacts along with using the haste spell.
