I roleplay my characters just the way i would act in that environment. The easiest example to understand might be comparing the Bard with a mundane musician. Practising as much as possible. I also know a locksmith who has several locks set up at home to practise on, and she always goes out and gets any new product that comes out and practises on it for hours so she can compete in her profession. Jugglers, magicians, trick shooters, you name it--they all spend much more time practising than performing.

I agree with Scatter on practicing. Exactly, being a musician and composer. The more I practice and write, the better I get. Although, as some artists have said, you do reach some plateaus along the way.

On the original question by RBeane1, I currently find myself in the same scenario of deciding whether to switch classes. I just got Excaliber after defeating Nessie on the first try. I haven't had this sword in the last 5 games at least. Of course, no one can use it (the Murphy's Plague in this game, you only get the rare stuff if you can't use it!).

I have a Rogue who will go up in 300K points. (The Monk and Ranger just went up, and I'm leaving the Bishop alone...) Do I switch him to a fighter at lev 17? His lock ability is 61 (76 with bonus), sword is 72 (Bloodlust), stealth 82, has snake speed, strength 97. Very tempting. I'm about to go to Bayjin so I have time to think about it.

Is Rogue to Fighter a good switch at this point? The better armor and sword may be worth it. So divided...this game gives you those hard choices!

Edit: mentioned the L&T bonus

yeah, i'm with scatter *sigh*

that excalibur is just too good to pass up, and the rogue isnt missing out on any development this late. and the bishop will just have to use her mana supporting any l/t efforts

i understand what you guys are saying about practicing. as a musician myself, i can relate about real life. as i said above, to each his own - we each draw the line where we feel is best.

happy halloween!

My feeling about practicing is that of course a bard would play, or a thief would work on locks. But I also think that in the middle of an adventure, the other members of the party wouldn't look too favorably on a bard saying "Let me play the viola for the next eight hours while you all stand around and do nothing." The same goes for the rogue or magic user that would want to work on the lock in the vault for a day with no intention (or need) to open it. If the others could go off and do other things, sure, but the many-headed monster that is a Wizardry party doesn't allow that.

I don't have anything against the practice of practice, but like I said before, it comes down to how you role play it.

Actually, though the game doesn't allow simultaneity, that's the game's problem. So in my suspense of disbelief, my casters are practising K-K or Charm/Mindread while my Bard plays around with a chest or fiddles. I know from lots of P&P play that everyone splits up to do their thing in safe villages, and even though that's played as simultaneous, the GM can only resolve the scene individually.
Besides, if you have a few Mana Stones there's no time wasted sleeping, and a couple Lockets/Necklaces for the Bard takes the time out of that, too. And if i make the rounds of all the Merchants with potion ingredients, i don't have to sleep for that, either.
For the practiser: i usually run my Alchemiser's Alc up to 30 with potions, then up to 50 with K-K, then the potions i collect from all the merchants are usually enough to get to the 70's. And if you PP you can get 5 Mana Stones by the time you T'rangaport back to Arnika. (or just sleep at Crock a few days to buy a few)
(edit)And if you take it to the extreme, it's possible to have all of the following Skills at 100 in ONE DAY of game time: L&T, Music, Alchemy, Wizardry, Divinity, Psionics, Mental, Earth, Artifacts.

eh, did you read the whole post? MANA STONES, a renewable mana source (sell/buy back to recharge, use only 2 charges or they vanish). LOCKET (of reflection) and NECKLACE (of endurance); if you wear any two of them they raise your stamina in seconds instead of minutes.

(edit) And using the Mana Stones is where the Artifacts increases come from.

(OOOPS edit again) L&T is a little longer, actually, but i never work it past 50. Depending on your Dex and Int, it takes anywhere from 15-25 game minutes per increase up to the 40's, then a bit longer, increasing every 10 or so, if you use the chest-inspecting method, maybe 1/2 hour of 'real' time, during this i read while clicking the mouse.

I'll go for the fighter switch, not hearing a good argument agin it. I must admit, I like hearing some of the more adventurous ideas of building up your party fast. Not sure what K-K is.

To paraphrase a former US president, he was not sure what the meaning of "is" is. It's a verb.

We had ten thousand kids on Halloween today, 15 bags of candy. It's a tradition here. Enjoy and have fun! (That goes for the rest of the year)

Will let y'all know if new things happen.

K-K is casting Knock-Knock, especially at the doors with many tumblers, to practise magic skills.
