the ironworks wiz 8 forum, THIS forum, is the best on the net. it's the only one i post at (arent all y'all lucky?), even if i occassionally lurk at the others.

the big difference is that people here are way more open to ideas, not just looking for the best way to powergame through wiz 8.

The numbers of wizardry 8 boxes moved was very high.

More than worthy of a sequel especially when you consider most of the rpgs on this and any forum sold far fewer.

Arx fatalis divine divinity wizards and warriors... many more might and magic 8... planescape torment icewind dale 2. gothic 1. None of those games moved as many as wizardry 8.

It may not have made as much money as it was supposed to, but it sold well. Probably in the top 10-20% of all products in its genre.

The Mighty Stammer, you may be totally correct, but what are your sources? Was it based on the second release? Where can someone find these numbers?

Hmmm... no just based on the large amount of retail time and shelf space it has had in the us. Most games are on sale in retail stores a small fraction of the two years wiz 8 has been. Its making money, now and then. It moved an amount of boxes that probably exceeds my estimate by a great deal.

within its rpg sales year only a couple games, morrowind and nwn, moved more by my unofficial estimation.

Again its in the rpgdot wiz8 forum that the sirtech site has just been changed slightly and seems to be under construction, and wizardry 9 as a domain name takes you to the new sir tech site. go there for the correct urls i dont have them handy.

Another hint interview with linda something or other suggests it might be the next project. All of this is rumours just relating the rumours.

Stamar, the long "shelf-life" of the game is because it really is good and, even with no advertising, a trickle of people still come in wanting it. Overall sales of the game, if not already, will probably end up over time to be excellent. That makes the problems with profitability all the more tragic... the developers did their job!

Those selling computer games are not, IMO, competent to properly market a game which actually has actual depth and high value, since they are so used to selling games that get old fast.

Like movies, the initial sales of a game, during the first few weeks after release, is a big determiner of profitability (or at least that is the mindset). While they should still be selling it in a fancy package, with a quality manual, for $50, they used initial sales (that were horribly supressed for the reasons given above) to determine their marketing "timetable." I wouldn't be surprised if a Wizardry 1-8 package were in the works somewhere.

That's okay. Undervalued products are available cheaply and become cult-classics.

So, do I understand from all the posts that a Wiz9 is a possibility? Sir-Tech's website seems to be toast...but the game is still available - and by some accounts, still selling reasonably well for a release date two years ago. Any more insights?

Yes Halsley, we could be seeing an announcment for wiz9 within a year . Oh and Sultan, IW is probably the best forum for Wiz 8, but RPGdot is pretty damn good too. My prob with the game crashing was solved in less than 4 hrs. The ppl there are pretty good.
