Wizardry 7 does work under win 95, and perhaps win 98 too. It was being bundled as freeware with some package or another about five or six years ago, and I was REALLY excited to get it on CD because my original disks were long gone! I was using a last generation 486 DX4 120 at the time (running either win 95 or 98 - can't remember), and it worked just fine.

So, perhaps it does work on xp platforms if it's run in win 95 compatibility mode? Doesn't that mode hobble the clock-speed?

I believe the problem with old Wizardry games and many old games in general was the advent of the Pentium processor. It wasn't necessarily the Win9x operating system, but the different processor. I couldn't play Wiz 7 on a Pentium 120 mhz, for example, but it seems jsalsb was able to run it on a 486 120 mhz.

Also, wasn't there a Pentium patch for Wiz 7? It's funny how hard gamers will sometimes work to play ancient games on bleeding edge computers. It als may be a comment on more modern games that so many of us go back to the games of the past rather than what's currently available.

You have to remember, it isn't just speed. The command set for the 486 isn't the same as for Pentiums. This is what complicates matters when trying to play older games on newer systems.

And yeah, funny how gamers want to play the good old games

Oh yeah... the Pentium Patch!

This site has the game AND the pentium patch (you have to register, but it's free)

There's also a routine called "Mo'slo" that can be run in DOS that will slow down a faster processor. This shipped natively with Wizardry Archives, but you can download it off the Internet for free as well. You can find it at:

I have run Wiz 7 (from the Wizardry Archives)on Win 95 and 98 (800 Mhz). There is one danger, some of the dialog/text clues go by too fast to read (even with Moslo). It is infrequent but you will miss a few clues you need. I forget which ones. For those, you will need to go through a walkthru or hint page on the Net. These sites are not hard to find with a search. Some excellent ones have been posted here. Wiz 7 got me thru many years of mediocre games, I always went back to it. BTW, I really prefer first person view. As a T'rang might say, that limitss my choissess quite a bit.
