Couldn't you save after beating her and try opening the chest until you get good stuff?
No.
Once you enter Bayin Shallows, the contents of the chest are fixed.
You could however save before entering, and load that old save file to get another try.

But before that I think I'll wander around, make money, kill monsters, and try to save up for the Astral Dominae...stupid Don Barlone.
Well ... there's a method to get the thing from him without paying for it.

He's too strong to kill, and I don't have a Faerie Ninja. It's only 90000 something so...it's alright.

Upper Marten's Bluff? I'll take a look. Pretty sure I've looked there though...

Last time i killed Don Barlone, it was with a 5 character level 10 party on ironman. Well, i had a faerie ninja (level 9), and i wanted the CoC, so i prepared myself. With 2 haste potions, and 2 superman potions for each fighter and rogue, it was doable.
So once you have the money, you'll probably good enough.

And if you don't need the AD at the moment, you can wait until you are stronger.
Later, at Ferro, you'll find better ways to spend 90k gold.

Well, now I'm on Bayjin but I got my ass kicked by Rynjin. Before that I went to the legendary Rapax Rift and got my ass kicked by...Rapax. But I did manage to kill 3 batches of Rapax Scout and Bowman (was killed by Veterans).

I want some EXP. I think I'll go explore the unexplored area of Mt. Gigas.

Oh, and Don Barlone's going down! I'm gonna kill him!

I killed don corleone at level 10-11 with no potions or anything, on the third reload in this, my first time through the game.

I had bushido blade( which is aparently fairly rare lol dont ask me to remember where I got it) and lucked out with one hit one kill lol.

I think in 3 reloads I probably hit him a total of three times, so admittedly getting the %2 kill percentage was probably pretty lucky.

Right now my guys are around 17 and Ive cleaned out bayjin. I think the last major area I havent seen is the raax rift actually. Ill see how my guys do at that pretty soon, after a visit to martens bluff.
Oh ya I also havent seen sea caves.
