chameleon isn't as good as you think it is. try getting past nessy with chameleon if you can. or try going thru rapax area with chameleon without initiating a single combat.
to me it's just a waste of magic. |

In my experience, it reduced the range at which enemies spot you. You need to get closer to Nessie to get around her, and you can't avoid the rapax. But you might be able to avoid some fights in open ares (northern wilds with low level chars, for example). But the main advantage is IMO that you're less far from the ememy when combat starts. Whether it is an advantage at all, dpeends on your party. With chameleon, some enemies are usually in spell range. Without, they're often outside. |

Yeah: a couple of times chameleon has let me walk up right to the enemy [esp. savant drones/berserkers] without them seeing me.
And I make it a lot further past Nessie with it than without, though I still need to run when she spots me. Does seem to me that light cuts its effectiveness-- still, even if they balance out, you are still less visible. Oru |

It's useful for times you're walking outdoors and don't feel like getting into every encounter, it definitely makes it easier to avoid fights if you have chameleon on. Has no effect once you're in a battle already like speed/initiative would, it just can let you avoid battles altogether if you want to skip them.
Maybe the best thing it can do is let you initiate combat from a distance without being noticed and gain surprise on the enemy. That free surprise round is better than maxed out snake speed for getting in attacks first

Maybe I should cast it more then. Though I don't think I will use it much more than I used to, since I make surprise attacks with magic anyway (x-ray). Just walk behind a tree or out of a ditch so the monsters don't see you, then cast your spells. It couldn't hurt to cast it more though. There are some of those open areas maybe when chameleon is good.
