I'm not sure if casting Shadow Hound before you go to sleep will help any either. AFAIK, using that spell wakes you when they are still at long/thrown range so it defeats the purpose of camping to begin with.

I only have limited use of camping with shadow hound, but every time I've been attacked while camping with the shadow hound, they've always been in melee range.

Again, I didn't try this on AP, this was mostly in enclosed areas like Mt. Gigas.
